Long hair, industrial situations and..

Hi
I'm 48 and work in a heavy industrial plant (pulp & paper mill). Hot, noisy, plenty of chemicals, etc. Have to wear a hard hat and earmuffs. Moving machinery is also part of the dangers, conveyer belts, electric motors, various rotating assemblies, etc.
Does long hair get in the way? Not really, although it can be a major safety hazard if not confined. A lot of employers look at it that way too!
Ever see one of those beanie caps that welders wear? perfect for keeping hair under control! What a relief to hit the shower after a 12 hour shift and let it free!
I work with all types of personalities, from angels to assholes and am in a constant battle with the shaven head crowd, or the perfectly neat crowd. Funny how they like to dish it out, but can't take it.... one guy threw me an insult, and was pissed off when I called him a 'cancer patient' Another comeback I've used is 'take off your hat so I can see what a 6 foot dildo looks like!' They love to sling it, but sure can't take it!
To tell you the truth, a lot of it is good natured ribbing between co-workers.
Wear your hair with pride! I read an article once that said men's long hair is in fashion every 80 years or so. The last being the sixties/seventies and the previous one was in the victorian era with the outrageous sideburns and mustaches!
B good!

Hi Bob
I can totally relate to the industrial environment you're working in, as well as the personalities you deal with. I'm a self employed welder as well as a 'retired' firefighter, so I'm well aware of the dangerous side of having long hair.
I've used the 'cancer-cut' comment myself a few times! People either don't know what to say because frankly, I don't think they ever thought of themselves as looking like that, or they get outright pissed off. But I've never heard the "6 foot dildo" come-back before. I LIKE that! I'll hafta use it next time someone gives me crap about my hair.
Take care.
Haha..

Haha! I'm going to have to use some of those in the constant battle of jealous no-hairs against us all-powerful longhairs! That was a great brother, keep them coming! :o)

i'd probably keep my hair short if it became fashionable to the extent that everyone had it. The reason... I'm not normal.

Hey i agree, except long-hair has been "in style" since the 60/70's up until present day, there are ALOT more long-haired men than i ever realized. I guess i never really looked but i see atleast 15 everyday and i live in a small "suburb" of new orleans. later JB
