Top-knot

Greets!
I have wavy brown hair with dirty blonde highlights. I've never had my hair long so I'm not really sure how I should condition my hair as I let it grow out. Right now it's around 3-4 inches on top and just over two on the sides.
I've always thought that long hair was cool and I really dig the top-knot hair style like the samurai.
Should I keep the hair cut and let it grow out uniformly? Or should I just let it grow and dress it up as it gets long?
My hair does tend to frizz some. Is there a hair treatment I can use to help control it without drying my hair out?
BTW, on average, how long do you think it will take to grow to a proper length to be pulled into the knot?

I would say to take your hair and put it into a pony tail. Measure the circumference of the pony tail (probably about 2 to 6 inches, depending on how thick your hair is). Take this number and multiply by 6. That is the length (starting from the base of the knot) that you will need.
A typical pony tail on a guy would have a circumference of, say, 2.4 inches (6 cm). Multiply by 6 to get 14 inches (36 cm). This is the length you will need starting from where the pony tail holder would usually go.
If you have very straight and/or slippery hair, the knot will not stay, but will just fall out.
Or maybe you are talking about a bun. A bun works best if the hair is not blunt cut. This way, as you are twisting the hair around into a bun, the lock of hair gets thinner as you wrap, thus turning into a convenient tie. If your hair is blunt cut, you will probably have to secure the bun with a hair tie.
