Benzoyl Peroxid & Hair
Posted by George on February 06, 2003 at 14:10:01: Previous Next
Hey guys. I've been growing my hair for over a year now. It's been a painful process because my hair is curly, but I have faith :).
Anyway, I've always had my hair short, and it's always looked black (or possibly a really really really really dark brown), I mean I can't really say it was totally black for sure. As my hair is getting longer, it appears to be a dark brown, instead of black.
Now I've come up with two possibilities:
1) My hair color is dark brown, and now that it's much longer, you can see the color.
2) I've been using OXY Maximum Strength Acne Wash for about the last 6-7 months. That contains 10% Benzoyl Peroxid, which I guess is a bleach. The bottle even warns that it might bleach hair/fabrics. Since my hair is long, I always get some of the acne wash on it (on my bangs and hair line). It doesn't stay in for more than a minute, maybe 2 minutes, and I always (almost always) throughly rinse it out of my hair.
Now my questions is, what do you guys think is the cause?
Thanks alot.
if it's DARK brown...

then the lightening action of your acne wash is a weak one.
Do you care that your hair is dark brown? Probably won't get any lighter...
ps: I have always wondered about those acne products...do they EVER really work???
Sometimes an Rx might be better?

So then it's definitely the acne wash and not a common side effect of growing your hair long? I don't mind it being dark brown, it's just I'm trying to keep it as healthy as possible.
And yea, this acne wash worked great for me, it's amazing!

They might work for very mild acne... if you have a REAL problem, they won't help. Rx is definitely the way to go... Accutane saved me. Though it absolutely destroyed my hair at the time.

Accutane is a form of chemotherapy, that is why women should not get pregnant while taking it or for a certain length of time after being off it. It does wonders for bad acne. Tetracycline and other antibiotics work real well for most people. I am not surprised that accutane was hard on your hair. I am glad it worked for you.

I've never heard of taking tetracycline for acne before. Seems kind of harsh -- well it's a rather harsh antibiotic in general. Is there a topical version available for acne? If it is not topical, I'd be wary of using an antibiotic, as it could really screw up the ecology of your gut.
