support for awkward stagers

I've had two 'awkward' stages (the whole of 1997 and the whole of 2001). That'll teach me to have it cut again.
Just keep going and know that you'll get the hair you always deserved at the end of it. My hair's very thick with a slight wave and looks terrible when it's growing out (it curls up at the ends and looks really 'big') but as the weight of the hair takes over as it grows it looks great ! The other great thing with thick coarse hair is that it never tangles (well mine doesn't). You might look like a complete dork today but just think in 12 months time it'll all be worth it.
Just for info, I've had 4-year hair before and I'm now 26 months (long hair for ever now)

I'm starting to get in the awkward stage, it kinda looks like an afro lol. How long will this last?
I don't want extremely long hair, just a few inches above my shoulders.

I've been growing from a 1" cut for 27 months and it's now just below shoulder blade level. The awkward bit was the first year. If you want to look tidier try loads of gel but that's personal taste. I think it also depends on whether you have thick or fine hair. Keep on growing - every day you're nearer your goal and its worth it !! Don't be tempted to have ANY trims/maintenance cuts - every inch of hair on the barbershop floor sets the clock back at least 2 months.
