...the head is shaved but there is one long tuft of hair on the back that is worn in a ponytail? It could be oriental in origin. Is there religious significance to it? (BTW, I'm not considering this style for myself, just wondering about it).

He's not talking about a mullet. He's referring to the "style" (term used loosely here) where you completely shave the head execpt for basically a circle on the back of the head. That circle has long hair, usually braided or in a pony tail.
I can't remember the name of the cut though. I personally think it looks really stoooopid, but hey, that's my opinion. To each his own, I guess!

It does look a bit stupid, but if i was going to cut off my hair for some reason, i'd be tempted to have it like that for a couple of days first, just to see what people's reactions would be :)

Oh! I thought you planned to do it on purpose and keep it like that.
If the day ever came that I shaved my head, I'd do that too! In fact, why stop there. Why not have three tails...one on each side and one in the back! That'd get some looks!

It's called a "top knot". There is at least one religion where this hair style is significant (although at the moment, I cannot recall which one(s) it is) It is believed that when God calls them, that he will grab them by the top knot and pull them into heaven.

It is called a que. It has traditionally been worn in a long braid by Chinese men. Um, well at least before the "cultural revolution" anyway.
That's it, thanks!

Of course, a que. I don't remember it ever being in fashon in North America.

The Hare Rama Hare Krishna followers also wear a similar hairdo (if one may call it that). It's an ancient Indian (amongst the Hindu people) custom to maintain that hairstyle. Only the priest community used to have this hairstyle, although during the 90's, it hit the fashion ramps in a big way when male models sported it.
Although, it is supposed to have a scientific significance (that I don't know much about), here is the explanation I found for it.
"The shaven head with 'Shikha' (a type of ponytail at the back of the head) is traditional for the men. It is clean and practical and signifies submission to the Lord and detachment of the material world."
Thankfully, I don't think it has anything to do with God pulling one into heaven by it like one individual put it...:)

Actually it's a style associated with the Hare Krishnas of the 60's & 70's. It has some Tibetan monk roots. OK, laugh, but I think it's kind of unusual and interesting.
