touch-up trim?

Having started out from a rather standard layered cut, it is obvious that my hair is in two separate layers. For the last 20 months, I've just been letting everything grow and have done nothing about it. Since I work in a professional environment, I wear a ponytail most of the time anyway so the difference is not evident.
Is there a general rule as to whether (or when) a trim should be done to even the layers? You guys who have really long hair, did you ever trim it just to even up a bit? Or...should I just try to ignore it and when it all gets to terminal length is will be even anyway?

No general rule about it other than long hair is hair that has been around awhile and doing some maintence on it to keep it looking nice is always a good thing.
I get mine trimmed about every 3-4 months. That's a very basic evening of the ends type of trim.
Trimming to even the layers may be more of a cut but if you trim the longest part now and then the rest will eventually catch up.
As it gets longer you won't notice the layers as much either.
Either way just have patience and don't do any quick, rash things with your hair...if you are trying to grow it really long.
A lot of stuff with hair you have to figure out for yourself because YOU live with it and deal with it every day.
