Natural hair straightening..?

Hey guys. I'm closing in on my 9th month of NO cuts (Since August 5th, 2002 heh) and my hair is getting longer! Right now it easily covers my eyes and is almost to the tip of my nose (it can be pulled there). Now, when I first started growing, my hair looked quite dreadful and definitely awkward. I'd say about August to December my hair was very wavy and almost curly. The past two months or so my hair started looking better as it got longer, and started to straighten as i would part it, yet be curly at the ends. Now, all this month, I have been pushing all my hair (my bangs too) behind my ears and I have noticed the curls have disappeared. My hair is starting to look very nice and straight (save for the "wings" on my neck that curl out). My question is: Is this normal? Can hair be wavy in the beginning and start getting straight? I havent straightened it with an iron or anything although I wore a headband a lot the past 8 months (no so much now). Anyone else have a similar experience? I think if most new growers knew this newfound light at the end of the tunnel they would stick it out and not cut it. Cheers.

And yes, it is normal.
The ends usually start out being more curly than the rest of your hair...
because there was less length of hair to weigh it down.
