Sideburns.. shave or not to shave ??

Ok so i've just had a shave, and i'm thinking i've made a mistake.!!
I'm well into my 3rd month of growing out my hair, and usually i just shave my sideburns to about middle ear level. But that was when i had a buzz cut.! now when i have a shave it usually means i've just had shower or a bath so my hair is totaly wet, so what i've been doing lately is getting hold of my sideburns and lifting up out of the way so i can get to the underside short bits and shaving the underside level with middle ear.
But tonight i didn't i had momentry laps of conscentration and shaved top hairs level aswell !! BUT realised just in time and stopped of cutting them level with middle ear. I realised that the hair i was cutting were the short bits i've been tucking behind my ears.!!
So this is my question do you leave well alone .? or do you cut the underside of the sideburns. ? OR shave or trim top and bottom of the sideburn. ?
I hope you understand what i mean :¬) and thank's for your help.
:¬)

I've gone through the same learning process and yes I erroneously clipped some long hairs. My process now is to periodically trim my sideburns at about mid-ear level. I use a two-step method to isolate the "sideburn" hairs from the longer head hairs. I comb my sideburns down starting level with attachment of my ear. I then comb the side hair back behind my ear. The result is that all the long hairs I want to keep end up behind my ear and the short hairs I want to trim hang down along my sideburn. I have been following this process for a few weeks now and it has resulted in better looking sideburns. This has become more important lately as my hair is staying tucked behind my ears better and my sideburns are more visible.

I personally prefer the sideburn to terminate just slightly below the bottom of my earlobe. I know the difference between sideburn hair and my other hair because the hair that makes up the sideburns is more wiry and of a 'lower quality' - more harder feeling. I sometimes clip some of the longer hairs if it improves the overall shape.

Personally, i started out growing my hair, and to avoid the mullet look had an undercut. Then as my hair reached aroung 6 inches (my hair grows very fast) i stopped gettung undercuts, however when shaving my side burns i use a buzz razor instead and go all the way up to my scalp line, in a sort of diagonal mannar, so all this hair is very short, this also rids you of all the curly annoying hairs, looks pretty cool.
