Many awkward-stage things

Another 'awkward phase' question im afraid. I have been growing for about 7 months; for the first time in my life. It is about 5 inches long all over now and I want it shoulder length. I do some times have bad days which make me lose heart but the good days help me to carry on. On the bad days my hair bunches and curls slightly at the back and the sides (which come just below my ear lobes) seem awkward and discontinuous from the back. I don't want to brush the sides behind my ears because it makes the back look mulleted. When I leave the sides hanging down I look untidy. Is this common? When does this disjointed appearance between the back and sides fade? Have you any advise for the back and sides at about the 5 inches mark. As I said though I do have good days. When I wash and condition my hair, and then take the time to blow-dry it whilst running a comb through it, it looks a lot better and feels great! Does this work for other awkward stagers? But after 2 days or so the hair becomes greasy, untidy and full of strands hanging all over the place. Any advise on getting rid of this?
Also, I am growing all of my hair long. I was wondering how you deal with the fringe hanging in your eyes (which is the stage im at)? I sometimes put a bit of gel ,only on the front, to keep the fringe to the sides. Any other ideas for the fringe?
Thanks for any help.

It's common for guys who decide not to cut the back "mullet". That's the route I took, and yes, it looked pretty odd for awhile no matter what I did with it. But I can tell you, in about 4 months, the "mullet" with weigh itself down and start touching your shoulders. Your hair should start taking shape then.

You should part it down the middle or push it behind your ears. If it's not long enough, gel it down.
Cheers.

Whoa, is this really the way to go? Personally I think the "forced-parted-in-the-middle-and-tucked-behind-the-ears" look is awful (can you spell G-E-E-K-Y, for crying out loud). Especially if the hair is still shortish, if you know what I mean. I say just let it hang and move it out of your face every once in a while. Maybe that's tiresome but at least you'll keep your dignity! Eventually the hair will part itself because of its weight and it'll look fine.
Well..

The man simply wanted it out off his eyes so I gave him a tip to do it. I'm sure he could look in the mirror and determine himself what he thinks of it. Shrug. In retrospect his hair probably isn't long enough anyways, so it's a moot point. Just brush it out of your eyes.
Cheers.

I'm having the same problem. I have never posted before, but I've been growing my hair for about 8 months now. It's about 4 and a half inches all over, but the back curls out really badly and has just started to look very mulletesque. How specifically should I have it cut to remove the mullet, but enable myself to keep growing?

Think you'll find that you go through different looks the longer it gets. The "trick" is to improvise what looks best (all things considered) at a particular stage of growth. If you cut it now........your problem will NOT be solved and your long hair goal will never be reached. The back will simply curl all over again and again. BUT.........let it get longer and the curl goes lower and eventually straightens-out quite well. Hmmmmmmm.........lets see, you're at 8 months. 4 more months will most likely add 2" more. Now that is the biggest curl in the world if it can hold up to that. Good luck.

I am several months past you but well remember the same things happening to me. And it is true, it DOES get better, so hang in there. By August I am quite sure you will see a big difference, and a happy one at that! One of the big points of triumph is once the front bangs are long enough to tuck behind the ear and just long enough to stay there easily on its own for the most part. My opinion only: a center-part is a "must," at least for now. Good luck to you!

Dude, try this...it works for me. I shampoo every 2-3 days and sometimes condition in between. But what I have found that works for me is using a "leave-in conditioner" applied while your hair is damp. Then blow dry it straight...it should help control the curling. You don't need to use a whole lot...just enough to get the job done (probably not much bigger than the size of a dime). Some may argue that it can damage hair but it seems to have worked for me. I'd be interested in hearing about any problems people have had. Good luck!

Dave, I know what you're talking about. I'm at 13 months of growth from a buzz cut and, like you, I'm growing ALL of my hair out. I'm pleased to say that the 'mullet' effect has gone away, but I don't feel that it was ever terribly bad with me in the first place. My main concern is with regard to the curling and bunching phenomenon that you described: I get that as well, primarily at the sides. Infact, that is probably the main thing about my hair that I can't wait to get over, other than having hair long enough that I can tie back. Speaking of the later, to get around the issue of having bangs in one's eyes and face, I've resorted to wearing a bandana, which works rather well.
I've actually got a picture to illustrate the curlage I spoke of (Mind you, all the rest of my hair - which is covered up - is fairly straight with only a slight wave to it). Of course, I'll need some help getting this thing uploaded, so if anyone's willing to assist me in this matter, I'd appreciate it.

The bandana looks like it could work well. Last summer I was in a stage I would just water down my hair and gel it, would look pretty bad at the end of the day but it did a pretty good job. Now im just having to try control my hair (its very difficult when in school) and it usually looks very messed up by the end of the day.
Winter is good as I can just throw on a wooly hat and it helps keep my hair flat too, summer looks like it will be a tough time
