Hey, ive been really wanting to grow my hair for quite a while now and fancy doin it during a gap year away cos my family aren't too keen on it. Its short-ish just now. Does anybody have ideas of what I could do with it to give me a start b4 I go away in the summer (I hav quite thick hair)? Also, if I'm growing it for a whole year, how long should it be by next summer?

Are you going away so you can grow your hair? Wow ... Ok, so that was a joke but from now on I'm dead serious. Whether your family likes your hair long or not is THEIR friggin' problem and NOT YOURS. You're the one who makes decisions regarding your hair, man! Stand up for yourself! After all, if you don't actively stand behind yourself 100% then how do you expect others to respect your decisions?

How about not visiting a barber anymore ;) ?

Hair grows at a rate of 6 inches a year more (if you're lucky) or less (if you're not so lucky).

Thanx for the advice so far, guys.
Has anybody else had difficulty with family members on the subject, cos even if I don't take the gap year, I'm still desperate to let my hair grow out. Only problem is my friends/family are mainly short-haired and I'm not too sure how to approach the subject with them. Also, has anyone had problems with other people at university, etc...?
My hair's only about 2inches on top and a lot shorter at the sides just now. Its also quite thick, so is it best just to stop cutting it altogether, or will it grow more evenly if I grow it into a style and let it get longer from there? Is the awkward stage really that bad, or is there a way of growing it so that it doesn't look a big mess in the middle stage?
Finally, my hair does normally grow quite quickly. Just for a rough idea, how long did everybody else take to reach shoulder-length, or a length where it looks good?
Cheers!

Once again, it's your life, your body, your hair. Besides, it's not as if you're injecting heroin into your veins or selling a kidney. It's just hair so get it over with already! Have a couple of smart answers ready for the stupid questions and remarks and you're set.

I'd say just stop cutting it for now and see what happens. The severity of the dreaded awkward phase depends on the hair type and there really is no way of growing it to prevent it from looking like a big mess if you have a certain hair type. It's all a matter of taking your medicine like a man as some like to say (no offence to the ladies!).

Because my hair is wavy/curly it took me about a year for it to reach shoulder length. I think. I never really kept track.

Thanx for the encouragement, Devon. Its good to hear some from someone on my side. I'm just going to stop going to the barbers for the meantime and see how it goes. How long is your hair just now, and when you were growing it out, how long was it b4 you started to think of it as being 'long', ie. was there any milestones or anything?

Let's just say that I'm not some kind of drone. Currently my hair appears to be shoulder length. Technically it's longer than that but it's curly so ... I started growing it out about a year and a half ago and before that I used to grab a buzzer every couple of weeks. Then I just had enough of that and decided to go for it. Milestones, heh? Well, I never gave them a lot of thought, to be honest. My awkward phase took a long time (because of my hairtype) but I endured it without any real problems, except for some remarks. I just got out of it and that's great. There's still a way to go though. All that time I just wore my hair loose and that's what I plan to keep doing. Most of the time anyway, if I can help it.

STAY AWAY FROM SCISSORS...
Take a good multi-vitamin. They really help hair to grow faster.
Other than that, they say excersize helps to stimulate hair growth.
Eat a good healthy diet.
That's just about all you can do. Hair can only grow so fast.
