I use the big, thick/wide toothed combs.
I do on occasion use a big round brush to cool air blow dry the bangs/front. It curls it out of my face and to the side. It also relaxes the curl I get around my face to a larger, looser curl.

If you get a "boar hair" brush, it will just SMOOTH the top hairs and doesn't "grip" the hair as well as us thick haired people would like. I use this Revlon Brush, and the bristles are made from nylon, or some other synthetic material. Really grips and brushes through my thick mop. i got it for seven bucks and it just rocks. So nylon gets a big thumbs up from me!! :) Combs are about as useless as punching myself in the face. Heck, that would work better.

Like Sherri, I prefer to use the big, wide-toothed combs. I also use a narrowed toothed comb afterwards to find any remaining tangles.
I own a paddle brush but I use it very rarely.

Comb. A brush just skates over my mop.

For some it depends on how long their hair is.
Any replies might also mention their own length along with the instrument they use.

About the base of the shoulder blades - but extremely thick and wavy. I tried a brush and it just skates across the surface.
So density as well as length is a factor.
