hey guys. i have thick curly hair, ive been growing it out for well over a year now, my bangs are down to my chin and i just started growing out the back about 6 months ago.
anyway, i'm cursed with dry hair. it's really volatile, if i take care of it just the right way, it's great, if not, its screwed. so moisture is #1. i just realized that my herbel essenses (which is the best i've found so far) has sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate, which really dry hair (so i've read). anyway, the shampoo is still ok on my hair i guess, but i need all the moisture i can get. so i'm thinking of switching to baby shampoo. i've thought about making my own shampoo or getting some special herbal salon brands, but the baby shampoo seems like a great and cheap alternative...
anyway, there is a list of johnson baby shampoos at drugstore.com:
http://www.drugstore.com/search/search.asp?searchType=1&srchtree=5&search=baby+shampoo&tp=4&ss=&sb=17808&trx=SRCH-0-TB&trxp1=17808
can anyone who knows about all the "not so good" ingredients tell me which one of these has the least or none at all. or should i get something else?
thanks a lot.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and Ammonium Laurel Sulfate are surfactants which are needed in shampoos to create lather and clean better. But they aren't all equal. Ammonium Laurel Sulfate is bad for the hair and is usually found in cheaper shampoos. Sodium Laureth Sulfate is the best out of all these and is usually found on quality products like expensive salon products (Nexus, American Crew, Kerastase (by L'Oreal and VERY expensive) etc.)

Do you use conditioner? That will be more important for keeping your hair from being so dry.

yea i do use conditioner (herbel essences). i mean my hair doesn't get so horribly dry, its just i want to do anything i can to help. basically what i'm looking for is shampoo without sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate. i'm guessing there arent any over the counter ones ;)

I would suggest trying some other conditioners and see if you can find one that works better for you. Deep conditioning every week or two is a good idea as well if you don't already.
I always recommend Aussie products (moist) because I've had great results from them, they have a full line of things to use, they are very easy to find and don't cost all that much.
Aussie's shampoo has sodium laureth sulfate but their conditioners don't. You might find a poo that doesn't have it and then use an easy to find conditioner like Aussie. You won't use as much poo as conditioner (or ideally shouldn't).
I've heard of discussions concerning sodium laureth sulfate and how they can cause some...let's say interesting mental effects in the long run...but there haven't been any real conclusive studies or tests that can for sure confirm this, it's still kind making a best guess concerning introducing certain chemicals to the body. Avoid it if you want but it's not like you are going to drop dead next year if you use products that contain it.

The pH of Baby Shampoo is adjusted so that it will not sting eyes...unfortunately, this pH is not so good for the hair. I think you will find baby shampoo to be drying to hair. There are adult shampoos without the "sulfate" detergents in them (but you'll probably have to go to a health food store or online to find them), or you could use shampoo less often, and use it only on the scalp, rinsing and conditioning your hair between washings. MOst conditioners have a mild surfactant in them to aid in clean rinsing, which will help cleanse the hair and scalp (with a little massaging of the scalp with the fingertips). In fact, some people are able to go without shampooing at all, just using conditioner. My scalp gets a little flaky if I do this all the time, so I shampoo every 7-10 days, but my hair is still in better conditioner than if I shampooed every day. When I shampoo, I first wet the length, and then coat it with conditioner to protect it, then apply shampoo just to the scalp with my fingertips, massaging gently and thoroughly. Then rinse, apply more conditioner, rinse again. A long way of saying, don't use the baby shampoo, there are better ways to gently keep your hair clean.
