i've been doing this hairstyle that i've seen around but not sure what you would call it
i take just the top part and pull it back like i'm going to do a half-ponytail but insted of that i do a braid and leave all the hair from the sides and back loose with the braid down over the back
does anyone know what this style is called?

Not sure if this will work, but here goes...If anyone can explain how to add a pic direct to the message, I'm all fingers!
I did not take this pic, I found it in the net. If it's yours, let me know and I'll take it off photo.net. I can do this style on my wife, so you may need help if you want it done on yourself. To me, it seems perfectly OK for a man or woman. It's not as hard to do as a braid as it uses just two strands and picks up more as you progress. (A twist style.)

Thanks for the pic, actually i might try that myself
what i was talking about was a bit diffrent though
i took just the top part like you do with a half ponytail but insted of making a half ponytail with it i made one braid with all the hair from the top in it, then with the hair on the sides and back i just left down/loose

I have a number of hair braiding books, and the closest name I come up with is "Top Braid & Free". Next closest has "Princess" in the title, but I suspect you might not want to refer to it that way...
Speaking of books, I may be interested in selling my braiding reference collection as a group. (12- 14 books in all, plus a few videos) I can list the titles if it seems there's interest here, otherwise, I'll probably do the Ebay thing.

Sounds similar to what I have done lately. Instead of a half ponytail, which for me includes the hair from the sides, I get my wife or one of my daughters to braid this part. It hangs down the back and holds the sides out of my face with most of my hair still hanging loose in the back.
