Ridicule on "shaggy look"

My last haircut was a caesar (I think its called) and I got that at the beginning of december, 2002. Now it's May '03. In the front i can pull my hair down to almost the tip of my nose, the sides go below the front of my ear, and the back is somewhere around 2 inches long. So far the way I style it is just put mousse in and shake my head around a bit until it comes straight down my forehead and rests right above my eyes, and i tuck the side hair behind my ears. Since I still live at home, my parents say it looks "like sh**" but all my friends think its fine. When it gets long enough to tuck the front behind my ears, I know what I'm going to do, but what can i do until then? I tried slicking it back - it looks.....well....let's not go there. I tried parting it in the middle - it doesn't look TOO bad but my parents don't like that either. Then i tried what my mom suggested - part it on the side so that the hair in front ends up right over my right eye - but all of my friends and i agree it looks really....gay (no offense to anyone who's gay). I don't know what else to try...maybe you guys have some suggestions?

: My suggestin: Wear a hat or bandana. I prefer the later of the two, as it can be tied to 'contain' more hair than a hat would, thereby sparing you of a lot of the side hair hanging out and getting in your face if you look down or if wind is blowing.

That's a good idea, but there's one problem - we can't wear hats or bandanas at school..... and MG I didn't mean gay like homosexual I meant gay like I say it. (saying "well that's gay" to me is like "that sucks ass" or "that was stupid") sorry to give a wrong impression there. Me saying my hair looks gay means to me that it looks really really bad. sry bout that :) any other styling suggestions? or maybe some pics would help you guys? I'm gettin a new digital camera on monday i think so once i figure out how to upload to my comp then I'll load some, maybe it'll help spark some ideas. But thanks anyway for the hat/bandana one.
