Don't expect long hair for about a year to two years depending on how long you want it and how serious you are about it. Good Luck.

O.K., first off, not washing your is not going to make it grow faster. In fact, there is nothing you can do to make your hair grow significantly faster. A persons hair has a predestined growth rate, and the general average growth rate is a 1/2 inch a month. This means a person who has a buzz cut who then leaves it alone for a year, will roughly have six inches of growth by the end of that twelve months (one year) Now there are lots of things a person can do that will help them to maintain their optimum growth rate such as staying all over healthy, getting the right vitamins daily, being gentle with their hair, etc.
About tidying up with trims now and then? Never believe the old tale that trimming your hair will make it grow faster. That basicly makes no sense. Cutting hair takes off length. Now there are instances in a person hair growth where they have damaged their hair significantly enough where they need a trim to get rid of dead and damaged ends, but if a person takes gentle care of their hair this measure can be avoided all together.
By the way you talked, your not wanting to grow very long unless I misunderstood, but in 6 or 7 months of growth you should have noticable bangs.
Remember, cutting takes length, good health promotes optimum growth, and the one thing we all need to ingrave on our minds and memories about growing long hair, and that is PATIENCE! Hair growth is slow and a person needs to maintain patience and just let mother nature do her thing and in a two years from a buzz, you will be a part of this minority we call longhairs. Hope I have helped in some way here and like I said, Welcome! Peace!

Treyn, I notice that in your most recent pic and the one preceeding that, your hair seems noticeably longer. Are you one of those people (who's lucky if they like growing their hair out) whose hair grows much faster than the average 1/2 inch per month or 6" per year?
Maybe... ?

I'm not really sure about that, but I have fancied the thought that maybe my hair is growing a little bit more than 1/2 inch a month. I can only hope I guess. Some other people have mentioned the same thing so maybe it is true. From now on I will be posting my progress pics with my hair wet like my son did in his last one. That will give a better view of truly how long it is. Thanks for the observation, bro! Peace!

Sure seems like something is going on with the part of your physiology that controls hair growth! It would be helpful if you posted more than one photo of each stage of growth....it has to be said that shots of watered-down hair will actually give an atypical look of how much change has really taken place (plus H2O adds bulk to hair).

: do u ever need to go to the hairdressers now and again to get it tidied up?
I recommend NOT doing so. Good luck surviving through the summer, though: Awkward hair + overbearing heat (and smog, and humidity, and terrible UV indexes) = HELL. At least, such was my experience when my hair was in the deepest phases of its awkward stage last year.
As for fringes and such, If you want to see what hair may look like after about a year of growth w/out cuts and trims, scroll down a little; I recently posted a 15 month progress pic.
Good luck.

Good luck!
The advice you have been given by the other responders to your posting is good.
Half an inch a month will seem slow, but by the end of the summer you will notice a lot more hair. Don't trim it - that will only make it shorter, and probably not a lot tidier, as it will almost certainly ook a bit of a mess for a few months as you are growing it out.
Best tip: don't comb or brush too hard, longer hair requires gentler treatment.
Use any good quality (not necessarily expensive) shampoo and/or conditioner tat you find suite you, and wash your hair only when it needs it. That will depend on he weather, your skin type, how hot and swaety you get in your work and out of work activities etc.
There are no magic potions which will make your hair grow faster (although some posters hre may think otherwise). Just keep healthy, eat sensibly and be patient.
Award yourself 10 points for the first time someone asks if you are growing your hair, and be prepared for a variety of positive and negative comments, not necessarily from the people you expect them from. Others will notice, but say nothing. Some won't even notice. My dad hasn't noticed my ponytail yet, and I've had it for 11 years.
