Let me speak from experience if I may. I used to always get discouraged with growing my hair long because of the same problem. I'd say for the last 12 years. Here is what I have learned since finding this long hair hyperboard:
The awkward stage you and I both are in will always produce poofy, irritating, non-complying hair unless your hair is thin and straight. Now, to tell you the honest truth, if your hair is poofy in the awkward stage like mine, you are a very lucky person because thicker hair is the most impressive hair when it does get long.
There is the whole key. You have to endure the awkward stage and the poofiness that comes along with it untill it grows long enough to weigh itself down. Believe me, the longer your hair gets, the more weight it aquires from growing, and the more it will lay down under the weight. I'm talking chin level and longer. Anything you try to do such as trimming, thinning, style cutting, layering, these things will totally screw your hair up and then your right back where you started. In the awkward stage with poofy hair.
LEAVE IT ALONE!! This is the only way to insure success. Let mother nature do her thing. Growing your hair is the only solution to this poofy, irritating problem. It will either make you or break you. You have to decide how bad you want long hair and wether or not you are willing to endure to achieve. Where a hat, gel it down with non-alcohol gels to avoid damage, or just let it be poofy. Take gentle care of it. Handle it like a fragile new born child. Two years from now you will be glad you did. Scissors are a NO-NO! Hope this helps, my friend. Peace!
