Help, I've Got Curly Hair!
Posted by Jeff on November 02, 1998 at 17:55:39:
Words cannot describe the mop that is my hair. Thick, dry, curly, brittle, and tangled. I tried getting it permed straight, but it only lasted 2 days. I tried straightening irons, but it took too long, damaged my hair, and it was hard to straighten the back of my hair. Then I decided to live with the curls, and just mousse it when it was wet. But I don't know, it still doesn't look good that way.
Is there ANY way to style curly hair so it looks good? I'd prefer it straight, but that's just an impossibility. How about just wavy? And is there a way to do it so it can still look shiny, a bit wet, and healthy?
To see the rat's nest that is my hair, there are some photos available at http://home.earthlink.net/~drcrue/me.htm
Thanks

Jeff,
I know what you mean. I have the same kind of hair that you do (sounds like it - dry, curly, tangly, plus mine was frizzy to boot). Anyway for me to straighten my hair was to stand holding a hairdryer and brushing it which took nearly an hour and left my arms tired. Then when the humidity hit my hair, that was it. Then I tried going to the salon once a week and having my hair set which meant sitting under the dryer for more than an hour and in the summer if I sweated -- forget it. I gave up.
Now, I know people have found their miracle product that just makes love to their hair. Mine is Infusium. I think I shared this with the board before so I hope they don't mind if I do so again. I get the "moisterizing shampoo" and when I wash it out and towel dry my hair (just a little) I put in the Infusium 23 "Leave In" Treatment for "Damaged" Hair. I then comb it out (that's the only time I comb it) When it drys I have these really cool ringlets and not only that they shine! The second day my hair is a little bit bushier but the ringlets aren't as tight, but the shine is still there. To keep this up, I'm washing my hair every other day. But now that I work out every day, I'm washing it every day. What's great is the frequent washing using the Infusium hasn't dried my hair out at all.
I have tried a variety of products and I still get that frizzy, dry look. I can even feel it as soon as I wash out the shampoo that its a disaster. I can't use hair gel because it will look good while its wet but the next day when it dries it looks like my hair is prime real estate for birds.
If Victor doesn't mind, I'm gonna try and get a picture and show what my hair looks like. I know this is a board for guys.

Listen to Chaeya on this one Jeff, she's absolutely right. My husband has hair like this and your problem is your hair care products. Use a better conditioner, every time you shampoo and lots of it, then use a better than average dose of leave in when you're done. When I do this for the hubby he gets those very kewl ringlets, soft and shiny, otherwise its two feet wide, straight out and a ball of tangled frizz.
Good luck! Your hair is fine, its just the way you're treating it!
Very wishes to all!

Jeff,
I love your hair.
But then I know that you want to do something different.
Here are my thoughts:
Check out the Ouidad products at her site (see URL below). She has curlier hair than you and manages to wear it straight when she wants to using her products. Her site is crammed with good info on curly hair. Articles, notes, etc.
Also, several people have reported to me that KMS Flat Out will allow them to get their hair really straight with a blowdryer.
Last possibilies are Phyto's Phytodefrisant (expensive but really good) and ARTec's Smoothing Serum.
Here are some things that make curly hair worse:
Cold water rinses
Cold air from the blow drier...makes curls more curly
Thanks for the photos. Great hair.

Yep...It's nice to know that others have the same issues...My hair has been fried, processed, cut, beat...(lol)--you name it. In the past, I used chemicals to try to straighten my hair...Yes, it's gorgeous once you first get it done. It's so straight and shiny --Then let just one drop of moisture hit and it's over. Plus, if you don't keep it up, your hair will break off from the processing. I found myself making schedules around my hair...I use to bevel it with a straight iron but my hair is so thick (shoulder length) that usually I sweat so much from the work out of doing it, that it's not worth it. Now, I've just decided to love my hair...Tangled mess and all. I no longer have to worry about hanging out at the beach, working out or whatever and feeling bad that I just paid $60 to strighten my hair...Conditioner and a shine product are the key to success. The shaft our hair needs intensive conditioning. So a cheap, mostly water-based conditioner won't due. Wash and go with Pert? NOT! And I agree, leave it in!!! I found some really good shine products. One is by Citrus Shine and another is Frizz-Ease. Whatever you choose, stay away from ALL products with wax or alcohol in the ingredients. A little change is good here and there...but learn to love your hair!

hi all! i have curly/wavy hair too, and i used to despise it, but i discovered infusium 23. i didn't even buy the leave-in conditioner, just the regular wash-out kind, and my hair is fantastic. i would love to try ouidad, but 25 bucks for only 2 treatments is just a TAD outrageous. also, i don't recommend straightening it. i tried, and it only lasts for about a week and the time you hafta spend with a blowdryer is insane! i say go with infusium 23. good luck!

: Jeff,
: I love your hair.
: But then I know that you want to do something different.
: Here are my thoughts:
: Check out the Ouidad products at her site (see URL below). She has curlier hair than you and manages to wear it straight when she wants to using her products. Her site is crammed with good info on curly hair. Articles, notes, etc.
: Also, several people have reported to me that KMS Flat Out will allow them to get their hair really straight with a blowdryer.
: Last possibilies are Phyto's Phytodefrisant (expensive but really good) and ARTec's Smoothing Serum.
: Here are some things that make curly hair worse:
: Cold water rinses
: Cold air from the blow drier...makes curls more curly
: Thanks for the photos. Great hair.

: : Listen to Chaeya on this one Jeff, she's absolutely right.
: : Good luck! Your hair is fine, its just the way you're treating it!
: : Very wishes to all!

: : : : Words cannot describe the mop that is my hair.
: : : : Is there ANY way to style curly hair so it looks good? I'd prefer it straight, but that's just an impossibility. How about just wavy? And is there a way to do it so it can still look shiny, a bit wet, and healthy?
: : : : To see the rat's nest that is my hair, there are some photos available at http://home.earthlink.net/~drcrue/me.htm
: : : : Thanks
: : : Jeff,
: : : I know what you mean. I gave up.
: : : Now, I know people have found their miracle product that just makes love to their hair.
: : : I have tried a variety of products and I still get that frizzy, dry look. I can even feel it as soon as I wash out the shampoo that its a disaster. I can't use hair gel because it will look good while its wet but the next day when it dries it looks like my hair is prime real estate for birds.
: : : If Victor doesn't mind, I'm gonna try and get a picture and show what my hair looks like. I know this is a board for guys.

: OK, you look, from your photos, like you have great hair. If you want to have it straight, forget it if you want to keep it long. The reality is that you will dry and damage your hair at that length. Your best best is GOOD conditioners and leave in products. Silicone gels can do good as well. I imagine Rusk Sheen would be a little expensive to use with a head of hair like that...and you are going to need product that is at least of that quality.
If you chose to straighten, time for a hair cut, and I bet that is not an option you have considered. If you do, there are some great new (and yes, expensive) products that will straighten your hair and look great. Go to a GOOD salon that uses Rusk products and talk to them.

Something you might try: shampoo one day, rinse-only the next. For hair that's close to your current maximum length (meaning, you've let it grow out and it seems to break off at some point, rather than grow much longer) i've found this an especially useful tip.
I think this tip first came to me from Andre Walker's _Andre Talks Hair_ which I think is a really excellent book for those of us with coarse and/or curly hair, because he really pays attention to the way that different hair types respond and look better given very different care regimens and styles. I the book appears to be in print still. I've included an Amazon link below, but you can probably find it in the beauty section of a good bookstore too.

: Try spraying a leave in conditioner on it when its after its been towel dried, something by Aussie or Infusium is good. You sound like you have my hair. Some days I hate it and some days I love it. After I wash it, I spray it with a leave in conditioner and use my fingers to style it. I only use a pick sometimes or a round brush with plastic separated spokes to curly any strays under. Hats are great. Or cut it short. I've had hair short around the sides and back but moppy on top. Everyone thought it was cute.

Your words describe MY hair! Very thick, prone to tangling.. I have found two best ways to resolve the problem:
First, just after washing and while the hair is still DAMP, (not wet) have your S.O. to braid it.. (if you're so good as to do it yourself, great) I have found that this holds moisture in the hair and also helps 'straighten' it.. You can wear it in a tail which is ALMOST as good if you have no one around to braid it.. If you're like me, I have tried many different ways and have decided that I just have to live with my hair texture and make the best of it.. Perms and chemicals do little good..
Second, gently blow-dry it on low heat while you pull a comb GENTLY along the strands.. This is quicker for a night out on the town or a date..

Got the same hair man, but there is a great solution.
When it is still wet from shower, just towel dry a bit. Then, put in a generous amount of Mousse. That will weigh it down, make it more together, and the curls will form longish bologna curls that look great. As the day goes by, you may need to apply more as needed. You will love it, man.
