You can damage your hair if the PT is too tight. You don't want to pull excessively on it -- you'll be pulling out hairs (especially from the front). I recommend that you use a loose ponytail with a large [thick] PT holder. I only use two wraps. That keeps it loose and doesn't pull tight at all. Also, don't use PT holders that have a metal band on them. Use something thick and very soft.
Your hair will thank you for it.

Yes yes, good advice. I would like to add that you should only put your hair into a ponytail when it is dry. NEVER while it is still wet or damp.

wait, why not pt it when its wet? I stopped doing that but Id still like to know.
One thing I did in the beginning, that I later realized was so incredibly stupid is using a rubber band, holy crap what the hell was I thinking?! Definitely never use one of those!!!

The reason you don't want to put your hair in a ponytail when it is wet is because wet hair is 20% more stretchable than dry hair. So if you stretch it beyond its dry stretch capacity when you tie it, and then it dries out, it can do only one of three things. One is to break the cuticle inside the hair. This leads to dull lifeless frizzy hair. Two is to break entirely. This of course leads to short hair. Three is to pull out at the root. This of course leads to NO hair!
Wait till it's dry, then tie.
