akward phase is taking forever!

Hi, my last haircut was in october 2002, but i started growing at July. Im redhead so from what i have read readheads have more strands of hair than others, which is driving me crazy! when it will be the akward phase over, i dont mean to ponytail it, but to say its longer than usual. my bangs reach the chin if pulled and the back hair is touching the shoulders , but some people say me without any intention 'you have still the hair the short, have you cut it?" thats the worst thing that can be said about hair growing!
But in spite of that kind comments it didnt ever crossed my mind to cut or trim my hair, somehow im very sure it will look very cool when longer so i think that the akward phase could be over some day :-/
if there is any readhead with thick long hair out there, could someone give me some advise on how to handle hair until it gets longer? or some encoragement?
(i think i wrote this because im having a bad hair day :-)

the Awkward Phase is a sucky period. Now, since you say that your last cut was in October...well. but this October you should see a dramatic change. It's not that far away really.
Things may calm down even before the!
Good Luck!
You've explained my situation exactly

I have red hair also, but what I've heard about redheads, we actually have LESS strands of hair than others. It seems thick because each strand of hair is larger in diameter. I guess thats what coarse hair is. Anyway, my hair pulls down to below my chin but when dry and hanging by itself, it barely goes past my eyes. I usually just let it airdry and I dont use any products besides shampoo & conditioner, and it doesn't get too out of control. I'm guessing I still have another year or so to go before my hair weighs itself down and actually looks as long as it is.
