I've got to admit that what you said is really shocking for me. I don't belong to any kind of religion, but I have respect for it, for people's faith. It seems to me like you ain't got not respect at all. Claiming "a new faith" as you said , even for keeping long hair is unthinkable.
I doubt that religion is your only way out of this problem. Don't mess with sacred things. And first, why wouldn't you try to explain to these people how important your hair is for you.
They must respect the longhairs just as you should respect religion.
But you may think that what I say only applies in an hedonist world.....Who knows?

GuiGui,
I agree with you about the disrepect shown in taking on a religion just to save your hair in a job interview. The problem is that we live in a culture that has practicing disrespecting the human being for so long, often in the name of religion! Any person ought to be able to do a job without hair length being an issue unless there is a physical safety concern, and then, there are ways to protect the hair and the person.
Corporatations often have little consideration for the integrity of theh person. BTW, I am a Lain teacher, and for what it's worth, both "respect" and "integrity" are Latin based words. Repsect means to look again, or to take a second look. Integrity means wholeness.
Both missing very often in our cultures and in our religious practices.

I don't think that you have to respect someone's belief system just because they claim to believe in it. There are some pretty messed up beliefs and religions out there. But what you should be concerned with is your own ethical stance. Claiming to believe in something that you don't just to get your way sets a bad tone for the way that you conduct yourself in life. I don't think that this is the way to avoid this situation, it may not be nearly as bad as you are imagining it to be. Find out first and then try using logic and the laws to counter any descrimination that you may run into.

How about the Klingons? They have longish hair (can't remember their god's name), and it's an actual language now.
