Hair Salon Discr.

Does anyone else experience this type of thing?
I have visted a few hair salons recently researching prices for chemical straigtenings and various hair operations. However, the snickers are a plenty. At one place the two high school girls working behind the counter could barely keep straight faces as I asked about this stuff. As I was leaving I heard them giggle and one whisper "boyfriend must have stayed in the car". At another place an elderly gentleman getting a haircut at a nearby station made a "about time you got that animal taken off of your head" comment. (while i wasn't there for a cut). I know it's all mental and I will face discrimination in all shapes and forms...but are there hair salons that actually respect longhairs?

Yes. There are hair friendly salons, but hard to find. I have tried many and found 2 where I can feel very confortable in. You just need to use the consumer power and never go back to such places. However, there are people(customers) in hair friendly salons that will question your hair, or what you're doing, but at least the staff is friendly.

All depends on where you go. In the small western university town I live in, I went to a new salon recently, picked a stylist more or less at random, and told her I was growing my hair out. "Terrific!" she said, "you're the second man I've had this week who's growing it out." I have an appointment next week for highlights and a roller set. So far no snickers. I definitely decide where to take my business based on my comfort level when I go in for services, like roller sets, that are generally considered feminine.

At the Super Wal-Mart here in Taylorville, Illinois USA there is a woman named Patty, I'd say she's in here 40's, who I totally trust with my hair. I haven't been to her in a while because I am not getting haircuts for a long while, but when the time comes for me to do a little straightning out, say about two years from now, I will go to her if she is still working there. Otherwise I will have to try and find her because she is the only person I trust with my hair. Peace!
