Question : What do you think the following haircare brands all have in common ?

Aussie
Pantene
Clairol
Giorgio Beverly Hills
Head & Shoulders
Vidal Sassoon
Herbal Essences

Answer : They're all made by the same company (Procter & Gamble) in the same factory.

Now, what do you think is more likely (and more cost-effective for Procter & Gamble) ? :

1. That all these products are completely different and come off different production lines OR

2. That they're all basically the same but have different fragrances and colours added before going into different bottles (at different prices).

I wonder sometimes if the differences in performance we perceive in these 'different' brands may be illusory. Perhaps the emperor isn't wearing any clothes...

The Consumer's Association in the UK recently undertook an analysis of all the different brands of shampoo/conditioner on the market here. The worst one with the cheapest ingredients was, I think, the 'Charles Worthington' range (he's a famous stylist here - I don't know about the US) which cost about 20 times as much as some of the better, cheaper supermarket brands. I still find that the best conditioner on the market (for me) is Asda Smartprice Family Conditioner at 74p (about $1) per LITRE !

Anyone got any views on this subject ?
