Got a trim.. Mixed feelings
Posted by Gibson Guy on June 26, 2003 at 05:18:05: Previous Next
I had been unhappy with my hair for awhile. Which I posted about a week or so ago. I had awful tangles and it was uneven, etc. So I decided to get a small trim to see if that would help the tangles, and make it look a little neater. I didn't want to go to a salon so I had my mom do it. she has trimmed other people's hair before and it always turned out well, so I thought I'd just let her do it.
Anyway's I decided i'd take a half inch off. But stupid me, instead of telling her to take off half an inch I showed her using my finger how much to take off. For some reason I was thinking that on your index finger, from the tip to that first little line was half an inch. But of course I was wrong, it's about an inch! So, I lost a whole inch of length! I can definately tell that the inch is gone. It doesn't look the same, it doesn't hang the same, or ANYTHING! Plus, now my ponytail just looks like a little nub(to me anyway)and now the bangs won't stay in the tie.
But on the other hand, I have to say it does look better in a way, and it does look neater. Plus, I have alot less tangles.Which makes it ALOT easier to brush. And here's the REALLY strange part. Since getting the trim, I have been losing ALOT less hair. I have washed it twice since the trim, and both times I only lost about 10 or less hairs, compared to my usual 30+. And I also lose less when I brush it. Now when I brush there might be 3 or 4 hairs in the brush. I've brushed it a couple of times and there were NO hairs in the brush at all! I've never had that happen before. How could having a trim effect the number of hairs I lose??? Can someone explain this? Seems kinda strange to me.
So, in a way I regret trimming it, and in another way I don't. BUT, if I had to do it all over again, I don't think I'd do it. Or I'd atleast make DAMN sure I know how much half an inch is!! LOL. I can gurantee you I won't be getting ANYMORE trims for a good long while. Atleast until it's past my shoulders.
Anyways, just thought I'd share.
feelings...you only lost 1 inch...

If your hair was originally messed up (by a previous cut) then
maybe you did what was right for you...nothing wrong with that...
it's your hair...
You don't seem to feel badly about trimming it...so what's the big deal?
In two months your lost inch will be back.
As to losing fewer hairs, well, I seriously doubt that your haircut
had any effect on fewer hairs being found on your comb and elsewhere...
after all, the growth part occurs inside your scalp. Maybe more hairs
fall away without being noticed?
Anyway, Good Luck!

An inch is nothing.
This is what bugs me about longhairs. You would rather have damaged, nasty, tangled l o n g e r hair, than healthier hair. Sacrificing a whole inch should not freak you out. You are obsessing.
You are losing less hair to your brush because your not ripping hair out of your head from brushing though the old, tangled, damaged ends.
So much of hair's temperment is genetic. Your hair may not get much longer without encountering the situation you just cut off.
Is your hair length right now really that bad?

I never said my hair was nasty or damaged. Tangled, yes. And yes I did freak out a bit over an inch, beacause I didn't expect that much to be cut. But that was my fault, So I can live with it. Maybe I AM obsessing, but then again I DO have OCD, So I tend to obsess about things from time to time.

Possibly, but I never really 'ripped' any hairs out before.
: So much of hair's temperment is genetic. Your hair may not get much longer without encountering the situation you just cut off.
Maybe not, but I'll just have to deal with it when the time comes. If it happens again I might trim again, but there will be much less cut off. And I will wait until I absolutely have to do it.
: Is your hair length right now really that bad?
No,I suppose not. It's still about 12 inches long. BUT I want it MUCH longer.

Is that all longhairs?
Anything else bug you about longhairs besides that?
Gibson Guy's hair isn't that long yet to have old, tangled, damaged ends, and when it does get that long he will have well cared for ends due to the advice of guys on this board.

Absolutely not! I greatly appreciate guys who have long, healthy hair. What I do not appreciate (IMHO) is longhaired guys who do not have healthy hair and who do not take care of it. It seems that this board will celebrate ANYONE who has long hair, whether it looks good and is healthy or not. Like it is a SIN to EVER trim or cut your hair. Regular trims are good.
Long haired men are a minority. We are judged harshly. Nasty, uncared for hair makes us all look bad.
: Anything else bug you about longhairs besides that?
Stereotypically, I do not like the music a lot of longhaired men listen to. I also find most long haired men have no sense of what clothes look good on them. There are exceptions. Ultimately, I do not care about others. I like my well cared for long hair, my music, and my clothes.

Well....you can have tangled, damaged hair with only a few inches of length. He DID mention he has this problem. His trim of only ONE INCH probably affords him better looking long hair and the opportunity to grow it longer. He DID mention it is more manageable now.
Maybe his hair will not grow as long as he wants it. He has pretty good looking hair now. If it is the length it is now, does he not cut the mustard in your "religion"?

My observation of this forum has indicated "Support for anyone GROWING hair long", not celebrating. I personally have not seen any pictures of anyone with "Nasty, Damaged, long hair on this board --Have you? If you wish to have regular trims, then go for it. It is logical that regular trims reduce length or keep the hair at a length. But you do not define "regular" (How often) in your post, so I will leave it alone for now.

How would someone else's hair make YOU look bad?

Stereotyping is an unhealthy behavior.

What happens in 2 months when his 1 inch grows back and he has the same problem? "Maybe" trimming it is only a temporary solution.

>>Absolutely not!
Then don't make such a generalized statement.
>>It seems that this board will celebrate ANYONE who has long hair, whether it looks good and is healthy or not. Like it is a SIN to EVER trim or cut your hair. Regular trims are good.
You are of course incorrect about that. There is very little of what you refer to on this board and if you have spent even a small amount of time reading our posts you would know this.
>>Stereotypically, I do not like the music a lot of longhaired men listen to. I also find most long haired men have no sense of what clothes look good on them. There are exceptions. Ultimately, I do not care about others. I like my well cared for long hair, my music, and my clothes.
Again, vague generalizations.
Is that the Celtic music that some longhairs listen to or the Classical music that some longhairs listen to or the Rock music that some longhairs listen to or the Tibetan Monk music that some longhairs listen to or the Techno music that some longhairs listen to, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.?
Personally I don't dress in my finest when I am cutting drywall but when I go to the opera I do tend to look a bit more..."fashionable"? Could circumstance have something to do with it? As a fact, most of the population of the world has a bit of a fashion emergency happening but everyday can't be a walk on the runway.
It sounds like you consider yourself the exception. What you don't seem to realize it that most of us see ourselves the same way. If so many in a small category consider themselves to be the exception then what determines the exception other than your personal perception which seems to lack a bit of clairity on the subject?
How long have you been growing your hair anyway?
>>Well....you can have tangled, damaged hair with only a few inches of length. He DID mention he has this problem.
Sure, but you described VERY damaged hair that apart from some special abuse only comes with the lack of care over long periods of time. I know what you are talking about here but it doesn't apply to Gibson Guy (maybe you have seen his pics he posted recently?) and I haven't really seen evidence of it applying to anyone else here either. Many of the guys on this board are still in early stages of growth and the ones who have already grown it rather long have learned how to care for it through experience.
>> If it is the length it is now, does he not cut the mustard in your "religion"?
Man, I can't believe that you pulled this sorry and baseless attempt at criticising me out of your hat. Wannabees have tried this on me here before but everyone knows that it's a complete misrepresentation of my support for guys on this board. I have been at every stage of long hair growth that everyone else here has and understand the process. This is why I encourage them to keep growing their hair even longer than what they envisioned. The only time that someone's hair doesn't meet my standard of long is when it's obivously still short. The definition of long hair covers a lot of ground and the category I'm in is extreme growth so of course a person's hair doesn't have to come close to mine to be considered long hair.
I have to add that the position which you view longhairs from seems to be straight out of the shorthair's guide to looking at people with longer hair than yours. Why is that?

The reason your loosing less could be because there is no tangles and the brush glides easier, the inch youve lost will come back soon enough too!
