THICK HAIR HELP!!?!?

I've been here a few times before, last time was when I tried to straighten my hair with an afro-american childs straightening thing.. That didn't work at all, by the way. If anything, it made my hair knot more, and it weakened my curl so that it's between looking good and bad...
Anyway, this time I've got another question:
Having really dark, thick, wavy hair that falls a few inches past my shoulders all the way around, I was wondering if there was a possible way to get it thinned out or layered so that it would lay 'straight down' and not 'out'..
I've considered doing both, but I don't want to mess up three years of growth, y'know? Anyway..what's the input on this? I also was wondering if maybe a layer/thin out would reduce split ends and frizzies....
I'm going for mid-back length...so a move like this is very risky!!
Peace,
Shugo

I've got one...but it takes forever, and the frizz is still really bad... I need to find a way to make my hair less frizzy.. If I could find a way to make it look as it does when completely drenched, that would work..
So far no luck though. Anyway, thanks for all the help, guys.
Peace

Thinning:
Very bad idea, because then you will have hair that is multi lengths unevenly distributed and after a bit of growing those shorter hairs will stick out from amongst the longer uncut hairs and you will have a major uneven mess.
Layering:
Take it from an experienced individual here. Layered hair means thicker in appearance because of all the different lengths laying on top of eachother in a stair-step formation. Thicker towards the top, thinner towards the bottom giving a poofed on top look, weak look on bottom.
Sounds like your hair is full and therefore I would be impressed because I prefer the fuller look of long hair instead of thinner and too straight. A wave in the hair really does it good, in my opinion that is. Peace!
