I'm at the 4month mark as well, and I have wavy-curly THICK black hair.
Thick hair is actually a plus, as the longer your hair gets, the more weight there is to keep everything in place, i.e. in the long run, the poofyness does in fact go away, and I've noticed that in certain parts of my hair. You may actually be one of the lucky ones whose hair gets 'straight' as it gets longer.
(my mom used to tell me that I had straight hair as a 4 yr old, but I could not believe her, but it's true..I hated getting hair cuts at the age of 3 ;). )
Combing your hair to the back requires your front hair to be really long, and so that may not be a wise idea just yet.. unless you use a flat-iron to straighten things out and then gel it.
So, what I tend to do, is while i'm showering, I part my hair with an afro pick down the center, and I dry my hair, by shaking the water out...the back part of my hair is really long now, so I shake my head vigorously, and that helps tremendously with frizz, etc. don't towel dry.
parting your hair in the middle will allow more of your hair to appear longer, and in doing so, will help keep your rug in place...
good luck...

My hair is curly too, but I use a straightening iron and a hair drier and a round brush and it works wonders.
Here's what you do: After you wash your hair blow dry it straight with a round brush, then use the straightening iron to make it perfectly straight and shiny.
