I really think long hair is *in*

Everywhere I look I see guys in the awkward stage. Today on the street a guy with a lot of hair sticking out under his cap was looking me over as I walked past. Same thing I used to do in my early stages. Sure, I moved to the "big city" (Ottawa) so there are bound to be more long haired people. But this evening I was watching a television show taped in Germany and a pair of singers had incredibly long hair. The girl was close to terminal length past the small of her back. And they guy had a hugely thick head of hair that still made it to his shoulders. Without the mousse I'm sure it would be shoulder-blade length (think BeeGees). With hairstyles it is starting to look just like the early 70s. I should know, I was there the first time around! What do you think? Are we into a long hair trend in your part of the world?
p.s.: Even if it is true longhair won't last in the general population. The fashion industry requires a change every few years and the mob will follow the trends.

I agree. I see LOTS of people in the awkward stage! TONS!! Kids as young as 9 sporting shaggy mops. Though is "cool" to have shaggy hair with a baseball cap with your hair winging out...well..on the west coast anyway. I don;t see alot of accomplished longhairs, just all of us wannabees. haha. But everyother kid i see in my town, preteen or teen, is growing long hair. Not bad, but i know mine will be to stay, regardless of trends. But how can i judge someones sincerity to growing and keeping it long? Heck, for all i know, they might think IM the guy doing it because its cool at the moment.

I disagree to an extent. I don't think long hair is back in...at least not to any serious degree. Sure, kids are going for the shaggy look a lot more this year than five years ago. However, this look has been popularized by bands such as Rooney and The All American Rejects. I've seen a lot of guys trimming the front hair so it stays just above the eyes. Long hair is still quite rare at the high school level as there were only 5 of 200 graudating males in my class with over a year of growth atop their heads.

Wow, that's better odds than my school...0 out of 520. I've noticed that there are more guys in college with long hair as opposed to other grade levels. Needless to say, I like college very much ^_^

Maybe. The thing is that when you're into it (long hair, not birdwatching) you start noticing other long-haired people more. The people you saw on television can't really be used as criteria because they're artists but I do think that long hair is a little more common in Europe (opinions on this issue anyone?). It sure wouldn't hurt if it became somewhat of a trend though. OTOH, we'd be considered old-fashioned geeksd by the time a new trend rears its ugly hairless head ;)

I do see more long hair than I did about a year ago. Could be a trend.
Not long ago, it seemed like the whole world had been completely *won over* to SHORT hair...
so there was bound to be a 'backlash' from all this conformity.
Of course just because there are more 'bushy' heads out there, doesn't
mean these guys will go all the way to becoming full fledge Longhairs.
Many will probaly 'give up' before the summer ends...and school begins.
Maybe some are just trying it out or experimenting for now. But that's
good too. How else can they know?
Being a Longhair is something that comes from a place deep INside you.
Don't try forcing it on yourself if it isn't the REAL you!

I rather agree with the above statements and it seems to be escalating where I live. Very astonishing to me because a year ago I couldn't possibly imagine anything like this happening. How "long" they are aiming for I don't know..........but it is VERY POSSIBLE because of the "Fashion Industry" that in a few years long hair will be everywhere and very common. Then, the "Industry" will change, and thus the TRUE LONGHAIRS will be the only to remain.

gollan,
i agree with you. i am seeing a LOT of the shaggy look right now. fortunately, that whole "buzz cut with power bangs" look is fading away and we are looking at a 70's ish shag as the "in" thing.
while really long hair isn't in yet, it has to make a come back someday.
until then!

OK. I give up. What does long hair have to do with Windows NT?
(Except that you won't have much hair left after dealing with
the aggrevation of Windoze.)

I wish this were true. But I see alot less long hairs than
I did in the 70s. Alot less. I would travel into the city and
see lots on my way into work. Now I see very few. Very depressing.

I have to agree with the backlash theory. It seems that a few years ago there was a trend to ultra short (often shaved) hair. And I think guys are always looking for "less work" - the buzzcut thing was supposed to be less work, but it required more maintenance. So they just stopped cutting and let it grow, which as we know will lead to maintenance of a different kind. But for now I think that's why everyone seems to be getting shaggy.
And is it bad of me to admit I like the shaggy mop? I'm finding I don't mind the awkward shag as much as I used to (maybe I'm used to it, maybe it's because the extensions, which lasted about 3 weeks, drove me crazy - all that itching, and you can't really wash them completely.) Of course, we'll see in another year when I've got that much more hair how I compare to everyone else.
