Wash your hair 1-2 times per week, rinse and condition every time you shower. Add a curl-defining product, (gel, mousse, cream) and don't brush it.

the only problem is that you just need EXTRA patience growing it out. Its gonna look real bad for a long time. JUST HUGE!! But thick hair looks awesome long. It IS a struggle to get it there though. You really have to want it, cause with thick hair every month seems like a year. It can be unruly, afro like, and generally an embarassment. But thats the price you pay, cause your gonna have some thick, good looking long hair, that girls would kill for. so thats my advice. Stick with it. Its not gonna be fun, but come around here for some support. I am no stranger to big hair, and neither is anyone else who hangs out on this board. :) good luck and get growing!

Personally I loved growing out my hair. So much to the point that I really disagree with calling it an akward stage. Yeah it being thick the first thing it did was poof. I did notice that if I washed my hair less often the weight of the oil would keep it more or less under control. When it started to become kindof stilly looking I moved the part from the side to the middle. Alot of people told me that actually looked good. When it got to eye level and would tickle my eyes I started to wear a bandana. Personally I thought it looked badass, I thought I looked like solid snake from mgs. All those new experiences like running my fingers through the hair at the back of the neck where I never let it get long before. Alot of people complain about it getting hot in the summer. I worked as a lifeguard at an outdoor pool. Noone was hotter than me. Maybe I'm just stuborn but I just didn't let it bother me. I simply put on a boonie on to keep the sun off. Now it hasn't even been two years since I started, and all I can say is it's scarry how fast hair can grow. I had no idea my hair would already be THIS long. The best piece of advice I can give is be stubborn. Just don't cut it no matter what. When you're finally there you'll be like Wow, I don't believe. Look at all this hair, when did this happen?

First off, thick hair is NOT a problem, it's something most of us envy. :)
You're just going to need a lot more patience, but as people have said, the end result will be worth it. As your hair gets long, it will tame itself from its own weight and believe me, you'll be much happier with it. But you've got at least a couple of years go to friend. :)
