Q for Dan / Curly hairs...

My Q is:
I have curly hair and it has been almost 12 months since I last cut it really short like I used - only had 3 trims since (and no more till I reach my goal). My hair looks exactly like Dan's (in some photos at least). My problem is my hair is really try and frizzy. When I wake up in the morning it is all "standing" up straight in the air.
What do you use to calm it? what shampoo, conditioner gel?
I used to use headh and shoulders 2in1, then pantene 2in1 anti dandruff, now I use pantene perfect curls shampoo and cond.
I use Loreal Melting gel when in the states... now i am in Europe (vacation from uni) and I have not found the same type of gel here (a similar loreal gel here had alcohol in it and dries my hair up like crazy). I am using some "organic oil" thing, which supposedly adds oils to your hair to calm, promote healthy growth. Works kinds but I need A LOT.
Anyways... suggestions?

Hi Mike. You're right on the cusp of the "bearable stage" where it will start behaving more for you. Stay the course!

Shampoo less frequently, condition frequently. I can't stress this enough. Very few products look and feel natural, and I try to use very little gel. Look for products that are speicifcally designed for curly hair. I've had success with L'oreal's Curl Vive and Physique's line for curly hair, but everyone's hair is different, so you'll need to experiment a bit. Avoid brushing and combing at all costs, especially when it's dry. If you just need a "moisture barrier" when it's hot/humid, I'm having success with Aussie's Natural. It's a very light and non-crispy hold. I use very little. Just rub it between your palms and pat it on the outside of your hair.
I also started working out pretty hardcore around the time when I started to get happier with my hair. Along with that, I began drinking a ton of water, and I can't help but feel that it has been a contributing factor to my happiness.
I'm currently in the "not quite hitting the shoulders" stage, which is fairly annoying because it appears to grow so slowly since it's not growing in a straight line. Keeping my picture history has helped me on course, because I can watch the progress. It might be helpful for you too.
And don't worry...everybody still has bad hair days. The above is what I look like with no product after a weekend of chlorinated pool water. Yuck.
