Combing hair

I use a wide-toothed comb to groom my hair (waist-length when pulled straight, lower-mid back due to waves). My general practice is to first comb the part on the top and sides of the head, then hold it in a ponytai and run the comb through the rest. I would like to know:
1. Is there a better way of doing it?
2. How do I prevent the ends lapping round the base of the comb (creating problems disentangling)?

I've always used the following method. Separate the hair into sections and comb from the ends up, being careful not to pull too hard or rip through knots. Also, hold the hair somewhere between your scalp and the comb to lessen the stress on the roots and to help prevent tangling. Separating the hair into sections makes it much easier to detangle because you're not trying to comb through all your hair at once, and this also helps to prevent hair from wrapping itself around the comb (a most unfortunate problem). Try using a detangler if things get too, um, hairy (excuse the pun ^_^)
Hope that helps!

That's what I do too, and it works for me.
