tips on a hair cut

I know, I know, a no no for "longhairs". Well, for those of us not going for the Sheena look...
I'm aiming for collar-length hair without it looking mulletesque. How to cut it/get my wife to cut it? I'm thinking of combing it straight out from the top of my head, and just cutting it at just below my chin in the front going at a slight slant towards my neck. Am I making any sense to anyone? If so, is that a good idea? I'd rather not go to a barber/stylist because I'm NEVER happy after the farging bastages are done with me.
Here's what I'm going for:

Rule number 1 - Don't touch your hair if you don't know what you're doing.

Rule 1 notwithstanding, let's move on to rule 2....

Rule #2 - If you mess up your hair, I will laugh uncontrollably since I told you so.

GREAT HAIR!
From what I can see in the photo, the front of your hair is long
enough for you NOT to worry about 'getting a mullet.'
Good Luck!

That photo is from 'Judd Nelson Web Site.'

Hi Roman,
Good idea to wet your hair and comb it all forward. Just make sure to cut even, leaving no whispy bits. You'll have to get someone else to do the back as it's impossible to do it yourself.
I'm a trained stylist, so if you have a webcam can show your how to trim and thin it professionally. Good Luck, ... Lee

Depends on what YOUR hair is like.
Does it have some of the natural curl like Judd Nelson or is it straight or does it have a tight curl, etc. You may like his picture but your hair might not be his kind of hair.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Even hBK, though I don't know why you even bothered replying [read: little informational value].
Yes, that's a pic of Judd from Breakfast club, but he does have a rather cool hairstyle. I'm getting there slowly but every time I go to a hairstylist to shape it up, I'm totally disappointed. I KNOW that my wife could do better by me. :)
Hair Religion, I've got thick, wavy hair, but it acquires a nice weight to it as it is getting longer, a bit like your hair judging from a quick look at your website.
Lee, that's exactly what I was referring to, wetting the hair and combing it straight down on all sides originating from a point at the rear crown of my head...opposite the point of my chin, so to speak. I figured that if I get it cut right, the hair will lay perfectely when I comb it straight back. I guess my main question is in what angle to cut it at sides, or should I just grow it all out and make a straight circumferance cut all around my head at my neck line, like an overgrown bowl cut?
