Premature Graying

Yo! I'm Kevin a.k.a. That Ball Guy (juggler's handle), 20, and been growing my hair out for about a year. Something I've noticed over the summer is a little bit of lightness in the roots of my hair. Then I noticed it getting progressively lighter, as well as spreading to my sideburns.
My hair is mostly very dark brown, but now there's about 3/4 of an inch of nearly WHITE hair at the roots. Not blonde, not gray, WHITE!
My arm hairs are also white, but it's more obvious since the arm hairs have a shorter life span.
I'm going white at 20!!! Is this healthy?

True grey hair is exceedingly rare. In fact, I know of only one person with truly grey hair, and she's a teenager. What most people call grey hair is really white hair mixed in with other colors. Actually, that's not quite true either. It's colorless -- transparent. It just looks white the same way a cloud looks white.

The fact that you seem to be going gray is not necessarily a bad thing but if all of your roots are suddenly going white, well that is rather sudden. Check your family history and consult your primary care physician. There is some anecdotal evidence that premature gray hair can be an indicator of autoimmune disorders (diabetes, thyroid maladies, etc.) so keep that in mind. I inherited my mom's premature gray and started going gray, gradually, at age 17 (I'm 39 now). My oldest brother has been similarly touched. But my middle brother...not one gray follicle and he's in his mid-forties. So even if your hair eventually goes completely white, keep in mind you'll still have hair to wear long. Worst case scenario: going to the salon to get your roots dyed. No big whoop.

Assuming it's not dangerous, and you are healthy every other way I think you should be proud. A lot of people dye their hair over and over again trying to get white or close-to white hair, without (of course) really succeeding.
Having long silverwhite/white hair is quite unique, and I think you should be proud of it. You can always color your hair dark, but there's no way of coloring it white.
Long white hair and white clothes and you have yourself a nice look ;)
