Cool, someone with my hair type. My hair is straight and thick.
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that you and I have the best hair type for growing long. Not just my opinion, I have had various others on this board say the same thing. Straight, thick hair looks awesome when it gets long (below shoulder length and beyond, which I have yet to achieve myself)
I have the same problems that you mentioned, such as flipping out and getting poofy when I wash it, etc. I never blow dry my hair because one, I am too lazy for that, and two, the heat is potentially damaging to hair. Now, Aussie Moist shampoo and conditioner is a good product to use, you can get it at Wal-Mart (USA), not too expensive.
My general practice is to let my hair air dry after washing and then I generally wear a hat that tames it down pretty well, but to tell you the truth, the longer my hair gets, the more it tends to behave better without a hat or any hair products to help it.
Just remember, length is a head of hairs best friend, because the weight and gravity pulls it down and helps it to behave on its own. But for now while you let it grow, maybe try some alcohol free gels, maybe wear a hat, or use a detangler comb to straighten it out and tame it down.
But the best thing a person can do is try and maintain patience while looking forward to the end result when it gets sufficient length to behave better. Good luck on your journey, friend, and hang in there. Peace!

What do you mean by "flipping out" ? Do you mean that the ends of the shorter hairs in the top layers has the tendency to "stick out" in a 70-90 degree angle?
Mine does that, and it is quite annoying, it also becomes very poofy after a wash, and very frizzy.
Brushing it with head down and brushing from neck down to the ends seems to help the "bent" hairs, it's still really frizzy. But at least I am not looking like a hedgehog ;)
Mine also gets very poofy after a wash, but placing it in a tail for a few hours after it has dried kind of makes it the opposit. Especially with the new schampoo and conditioner I bought (Matrix Biolage, can be bought at saloons), makes it feel really flat and thin. Perhaps something to try?
My hair is hardly thick, nor is it straight (it kind of falls the way it wants to, neither flat or wavy, really annoying...), and it's just past the shoulders now.

After a shampoo and conditioning...
I would suggest that you work some L'Oreal MELTing Gel throughout
you damp hair...
then comb and style...
It makes your hair LeSS Poofy...more relaxed while adding shine.
Good Luck!

I have had a lot of success with Aussie "Hair Insurance" - a spray-on leave-in conditioner. It does very well taming my multiple layers and those very unruly gray hairs that have a mind of their own.
