Hair Nightmare!!

Hey all, I just got the braids I mentioned in a previous post removed. I was in the salon for about 6 1/2 hours, listening to the sound of my own hair ripping and breaking, back and neck cramping from sitting so long...my hair is currently half the thickness that it was originally before the braids went in., although the length is the same. I've been told not to put my hair into a ponytail because it will cause more breakage. I was shaking in the chair! Whoever said something like this isn't traumatic is dead wrong.
Here's my caveat, guys: don't ever get your hair braided. Ever. The damage is incredible, and in the end, it's not worth it. You can bet I won't be coloring for a long time, and I'll never take my hair for granted again.

What kind of a hack stylist was it?

I'll be damned if I ever sit in a chair for SIX hours while listening to my
hair breaking and being ripped!
Maybe I would have had my two feet take me right out of there!
Is it too late to say: Good Luck?

my friend at work got little tight braids too. And well, she had to take them out after 3 weeks cause it was way to hot (she also got extensions). And when she did, she lost alot of hair. Not some, like A LOT! So yah, its probably not the greatest thing to do for your hair. Her hair looks better now, but it looks totally damaged and she had nice hair before. So yah, definitely consider the consequences when drastically changing your hair, especially a very restrictive hairstyle that suffocates the hair.

I need all the luck I can get ^_^
Seriously though, the breakage was inevitable, because the braids killed my hair. I hope that it will be as it once was. Never again will I mistreat my hair! Right now it just looks like it's been thinned, so it's not horrible, but there's still less of it.

that should not have happened. I would have said something immediately, like "if you don't chill i'm gonna be out of this chair and my foot's gonna be up your a$$." If that didn't do the trick, the person would NOT have a job today...and would possibly be in traction.

I've heard that one before...pretty much every time someone gets all those little braids that they think are so neat.
But people still keep doing that to their hair.

Jenn, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with braids, but I can tell you your experience needn't have been so bad. I've had my hair braided many times, with miminal breakage. The lady who does my hair finishes in about four hours (and that includes restroom breaks, getting up to stretch, her answering the phone, chasing after her younger siblings, etc.)My hair is mid-back in length and frizzy, so as you can imagine, she braids super-fast. She taught me to keep my hair thoroughly conditioned and to be extra gentle when washing (water down and pour on the shampoo and DON'T scrub). Braids do need to be taken out after 2-4 weeks because of growth and because they start looking rather skunky at that point. It may seem like a lot of hair is lost when taking the braids out, but remember that the average person looses 50-100 hairs daily, so don't be so freaked out by the amount of hair that comes out. Beware of the cost, as well. Many people charge $100-$200 for braiding; my friend only charges about $40-$45, on average.
Shop around, it's totally worth having a stylish 'do that gives you the freedom to tumble out of bed in the morning and not have to fool with your hair. ;)
