Almost got it cut...

Well, kind of a strange story, but I thought I'd share it here.
Last Feb. my mother and a good friend's mother both ended up in the hospital the same day w/ serious heart problems. My mother made it, Dixie died a few days later. She was also a former employer and good friend, we considered her our 3rd mother.
So for her funeral I thought I'd get my hair cut, out of respect for her memory. She was one of the few in our small, conservative Midwestern town that actually commented (lightly) that she didn't like it. When I went to my hair gal I just couldn't get a "normal" haircut", told her to take off enough to leave it so I could still have a pony tail.
It took too long to get where I was and I figured if I wanted it shorter later I could, but that awkward stage was too freaking long. Unfortunately the length then made for an awkward looking ponytail as it waves at that length.
Anyway, been growing since then, but recently thought about getting it cut shorter. Came here and read this board for the first time in a while, and I'm NOT doing it now. May some day, but all you here made me realize what I truly want to do at this point is to keep it long.
My wife encouraged me to start this adventure, now she seems like she would be happy to see me get it cut, but no big deal. I've realized I have to do what makes me happy. Right now, I'm happy with long hair. Don't know if this is what I want forever, but it's what I want now. To each their own. If someone wants a shaved head, fine (tho I think it looks weird, LOL).
Sunday we are going to a reunion in my old college town, it's been 30 years since we all met and I was a 17 year old freshman. If they ask me why I let my hair grow so long, I'm gonna say...cause I CAN you bald (expletive deleted).
Thanks for such a supportive site, keep growing,
T
You had an 'awakening'!...

My first thought when you said that your mother and her good friend both ended up
in the hospital on the SAME DAY with serious heart problems...I thought
to myself: "Whoa! Is something in their drinking water?"..
But, you know, strange things like that DO happen!
Anyway, I like your response to any comments that might be made at your
high school reunion...
"why ARE YOU GROWING YOUR HAIR?". . .YOU: "Because I can." . . .
and leave it at that.
Good Luck!

I agree. You should leave it at that. I have had both shaved head and very long hair and with both styles, I have remained how I always was personality wise and that is open minded.
I don't see any reason why to call him a idiotic bad name just because he happens to be bald as that may not be the reason he is wondering why you have long hair. It is just probably he has been brought up to believe long hair is bad on men. We don't improve the situation by retaliating back at them(them being short hairs).
I act this way also when it comes to the feedback I get to my tattoos(and I have 70% coverage over my body). I could respond with rude comments but I just give a short response, smile, and walk away.

tatooedsean,
you misunderstood me, I prolly didn't make that very clear. I was refering to responding to my old college buddies, the comment would be a joke between friends. IF they made a comment, it would be in jest and I would respond in kind. I'm proud to say it's been 30 years since we all first met at college and we are still friends and keep in touch. That's the only good thing about it being 30 years, LOL, where did the time go?
Sorry, my humor doesn't always translate well to the written page.
