Dry/Greasy Newbie Question

Hi
Newbie post, from a wannabie long hair. I've finally got a question to start off. So here goes:
I've been growing my hair since January and althought I've had a couple of trims to keep some semblance of shape, (I was growing from 1 inch!)I'm now finding that I'm getting to that awkward stage (6 inches on top). I can cope OK, as my hair is pretty manageable when I wash it, but a day later its limb and greasy. (Never had this problem with short hair.)
I got a shampoo (Clarol) for greasy hair, but it doesn't seem to be doing much, Can anyone suggest anything that might work? Before I was using Pantenne Pro V and that was making my hair too dry (it contains Amonnium Laureth Sulphate, which can dry hair according to my hairdresser). I just seem to be swinging from one extreme to the other... :-(
Honestly I'm starting to think these big brands make their shampoos and conditioners to kill your hair after 24 hours so you have to use them everyday just to maintain the status quo...

Maybe your hair has build-up. Try a shampoo such as Neutrogena, the clear one. It gets your hair uber-clean and kinda drier. It's meant to be used once a week or whenever you need it. Then use any other shampoo and see if maybe your clairol one wasn't that good after all.

OK - sounds like washing your hair in bathroom cleaner...but hey, I'll give it a go. Thanks for the advice.
