I really want to grow my hair!

Hi,
As you can tell by my name i am well into the "bad hair" phase of growing my hair out. I got really fed up of having spiked hair for the past 4 year, so I reaslised I have always wanted to grow it long.. i just hadn't dared before.
Well now I have clown hair... My hair is extremely thick, but more or less fully straight (it has a bit of a wave at the fringe but i've read others here having that too!) I have been growing it now for about 4 months (from very short) and now when the fringe is pulled reaches past my eyebrows to the bridge of my nose.
The thing is that unless I use a mess-up gum (pro styling mess up gum by schwarzkopf) and then mess my hair up before work it looks horrendous like Ronald McDonald's hair. I have tried to have days (weekends as I dont have to goto work) where I use no styling product and just brush it... however within a few hours its edging back to circus hair!
I have tried to grow my hair a few times before and when ever it gets remotely near this stage I just get my old clippers out and shave the lot off..
However I really dont want to do that this time, Its a new me now and I want a new look to go with that! How long will this stage last??? Are there any tips for getting through it??? Or any products that can help me? I am determined to stick with this and so any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Many thanks
Clown Hair

Yes there are tips, my hair is about like yours, (thick and wavy, hard to manage alone) I actually read about a product on this forum that saved my life, its called L'Oreal Studio Line FX melting gel and gel spray, Its great, I have thick hair, that has cow licks (untill my hair has enough wait just to flaten it) and VERY wavy, I use this stuff and my hair basically goes whatever way i want it, and i will train it to go that way, Basically you should try this product, the gel is great, then the spray is good for keeping down any cow licks, otherwise keep growing bro, Lol im into the start of the bad hair stage as well, and Its not nearly as bad with this gel, the gel also keeps your hair silky and smooth, unlike most gel whice makes sticky hardended hair, try it out.

I'm still in the awkward stage. Whenever I have doubts and feel like cutting my hair, I just wait. Usually by the next day I'm scolding myself for even having such thoughts. If you really want to have your hair long, then just remember the hell you've had to go through already; do you want to keep going through that every time you try to grow your hair out? Besides, if you cut it, you'll probably be pretty angry at yourself anyways. Last summer I started to grow my hair long, but on a whim I went out and got it buzzed. The enjoyment in short hair is only temporary for those of us who want long hair. After experiencing the convenience of it for a short while, it started to feel boring and limited again, and I got pissed at myself for giving in; soon I was growing it long again. Imagine if I hadn't cut it, how much longer it would be now?
Why cut it if you're intent on long hair? Cutting it won't make it any longer. Just think of that way whenever you have doubts.
Hope this helps. Imagine how happy you'll be when it is long, and how accomplished you'll feel in that regard. Don't give up!

Well, my hair is collapsing and actually looks shorter now, cause its not "out there" anymore. Granted, its still huge, but its getting heavier and im beginning to look human. My suggestion: Stick it out, and every 2 months, your hair will behave better, and not be so insane. Though, i still have pretty big hair still, its alot better to the point where im not so concerned about its apperance....This stage, sadly lasts awhile, for me, its been a year and still looking clown-like, but theres different degrees of clownliness, and i think im on the downslope of that hill. Tell us how it improves over the months! :)
