Curiosity about facial hair growth

I'm 16 (almost 17) years old and after going for over a year without shaving, my "Side Burns" are fairly thick but only about an inch long. It seems like they reached their current length a couple months after I last shaved and have not grown since. What causes this? Will they stay at their current length until I shave again or will they start growing faster as I get older?
I want to grow my side burns out long with my hair but don't know how it would look, if anyone has any pictures of this I would love to see them. It seem like Geddy Lee from "Rush" had his hair like this sometime in the mid 70's but I haven't been able to find any pictures (aside from a vague recollection of a picture I saw a couple years ago) of this.
Thanks in advance,
boh
p.s.- Are there other long haired ham radio opperators out there?

Yes, there are. I've been licensed for over 35 yrs. Mostly bald now, but have had long hair since the seventies. Had a page-boy/bob for most of the 80's. Right now, the hair I have left is down to the middle of my back. Keep it growing!

Unknown. They could stay at their current length. Every hair has a different "terminal length" beyond which it will not grow then simply fall out. Naturally, it various from person to person.

I think it would look cool. Do it! :-) Let all your hair grow naturally. You've given me the idea...I think I'll let my 'burns grow out long. I'll try to get pictures then too. They're only about 3/4 of an inch now, but, in grad school, I had them around 2 inches.
