Question about not washing every day
Posted by Sid on October 01, 2003 at 13:42:22: Previous Next
Ive just started the process of washing my hair every other day to train it to go longer wothout washings.
What Ive been doing is washing with shampoo and conditioner one day, then the next i just rinse with water, then back and forth over and over.
But now I'm hearing of people who, when theyre not washing with shampoo, still just use a conditioner? DOes that mean I should shampoo and condition one day, then the next just use conditioner, and go back and forth? Meaning I would never just rinse it with water only/

It's really up to you how often you shampoo or condition your hair. If your hair looks fine without conditioning everyday, then don't bother conditioning everyday! Experiment with different routines, and see what produces the best results.
I'm unfortunately burdened with dandruff, so i shampoo my hair everyday to keep it at bay. My hair is pretty dry, and really doesn't want washing that often, but i don't have a great deal of choice.
PS, the "regulars" might have noticed that i dissapeared a few months ago... I've browsed the board occasionally, but not had chance to post. If at some point i get the opportunity to post some progress pics, i will do... My hair is really starting to look how i want it to - I'm starting to experience the reward for the past couple of years of hard growing :)

Good to hear that youre finally being rewarded, Nathan.
Sorry that your hair requires shampooing more than you want to- is there no good anti dandruff shampoo that you can use like a few times a week instead of every day to help out?

Everyone is different.
I shampoo mine everyday because I've noticed that I have fairly oily hair. Sometimes I don't even use conditioner. It becomes too oily if I do sometimes.
So, just experiment and see what works best.
CO Wash (long)

First let me say, I hope it's okay for a woman to jump in on this men's hair board??? I love long hair on both sexes, so I couldn't resist checking this out when it popped up on my search. :-)
Personally, on the days when I don't wash, I don't do anything: no water, no conditioner, nothing (unless it's extra dry and windy out, and then I'll spray in a little leave-in). But I can think of a couple options for your no-wash days:
First you could condition the length only. That way your scalp won't get to oily. If your hair is long enough to put in a pony tail, then just put the conditioner from the point where you'd make the pony tail and downward from there. If your hair is shorter than that, you may not need to do anything on your no wash days. The sebum your scalp makes usually takes care of the first six inches of hair, and you really only need conditioner for the part that is longer than that.
Second, you could try the CO (Condition Only) Wash that is talked about a lot on women's hair boards. I love it, because it gets my hair just as clean while not drying it out as much as shampoo (I alternate between the two). If you're familiar with it, great, but in case you're not, here's how it works:
Buy a CHEAP conditioner like Suave or VO5, they actually work better for this purpose, and grab your usual favorite conditioner as well. Wet your hair and gob the cheap conditioner on by the handfuls, directly on the scalp and throughout the hair. Use PLENTY, the more you use, the cleaner your hair gets. (My hair is mid-back length and super thick, and I use 4 or 5 handfuls)
Let that sit as you go about the rest of your shower. Then put your head under the shower spray for just a few seconds, enough to really saturate it with water, but not enough to rinse it out. Then massage your scalp and work the conditioner into a lather. Yep, it will actually lather because it contains surfactants. Rinse thoroughly, then apply your usual conditioner to the length only (not scalp). Rinse and you're good to go.
You don't have to use two conditioners, but that's the usual method. If your hair isn't that long yet, I would think one would be enough.
Well, that was an awfully long post. Hope I said something helpful in all of that! :-)

Thanks for the explaination

I've heard about "CO" washing but I didn't know the exact process. Thanks for explaining it.
