Can anyone help me?

Well, not for me. I'm female and already have long hair. My boyfriend has tried growing his hair out before but he claims it just starts curling up into itself once it hits his neck. He is caucasian and has fine brown hair that is otherwise perfectly straight.
Poor hair care I can advise him on but what about this? He has it in a standard mens cut at the moment (it is maybe 2cm long, cut from 6cm earlier). Is there a certain cut/style? I know it goes through an awkward phase and hould even out as its own weight pulls it down, but is there anything that would help during that time, or help to avoid it?
Thanks very much. I wish more guys grew their hair out. The lot of you look great.

Hi!
Lots of men are growing their hair at the moment, so the awkward stage is almost a style in itself. Perhaps a black wooly hat might help, specially as winter approaches - it looks a bit grungy but quite cool.
Cheers, Barry

Defo! The Grunge look is in! (Or at least I think it looks cool...)
There's mixed feelings about maintenance trims but I've found they help sort out curly ends, I've got a slight wave to my hair and once the ends get a little tatty they start to curl a bit.
But hey, even that can look cool... its the 21st century, everything is in fashion.

My hair did exactly that. It had this massive curl at the end that looked really stupid. I let it grow longer, it went away. Sorry but that's all the advice I've got. I wish more girls out there like you that encouraged guys to grow their hair.

The problem is caused by the constant movement of the head as he walks, looks up and down etc. That drives the ends of the hair against the top of the shoulders. Doing that a few thousand times a day makes the hair push upwards.
When I first grew mine out in 1974 mine (which is curly anyway)curled up over the period of six months or so alomst into a full circle. Then eventually it got long enough for gravity to carry the ends beyond the point where the top of the shoulders got in the way.
Only one solution, I'm afraid, but at least it requires no effort, only patience. Give it time, and the problem will go away.
And thanks for your encouragement to us all.
There is no way around it.

It happens. You live through it. It makes you stronger. You go beyond. It goes away.
He can use gels, sprays, leave-in conditioners, hats, etc. Whatever it takes to live with it through the "I look like I was just in a bad accident" stage.
At least he has you by his side. That's a big plus. Most have to go through it alone. Give him the support he needs.
