G'day mates!
I was shoppin through me walmart and came across a wide tooth comb.
Why is it that these are reccomended above all other types of combs?

These combs are best because they don't yank or pull the hair as much as other combs because the teeth are spaced further apart. That being said, people with fine or thinning hair might find them annoying or ineffective.

I have always had fine hair, but I get quite a lot of split ends, which may have something to do with the fact that I've never been able to grow my hair beyond 24 inches (it's 21 inches at the moment, even though it hasn't been trimmed in a long time).
What should I be using to comb my hair? I've been told a brush is better, but I can't fit one in my pockets (guy problem, that is, Jenn!), plus the one I have doesn't seem to get right through my hair. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure that a "men's" brush is very suitable for long hair, they are probably specifically designed for short hair.
Go with the wide tooth.

I consider my hair fine. I choose the wide tooth plastic comb a must.
If there are rough edges you can sand them off with a nail file. It won't catch your hair that way.
I wash and condition my hair, wring it out with a towel, spray on a leave-in conditioner, then comb it out starting at the bottom. Then air dry and put it in a pony tail, spray with aussie sprunch spray (has maximum hold), smooth down the fly-aways, and I'm ready for work.
especially for curly hair

The reason (in my experience) if that wide tooth combs snag hair less and are actually easier to use for working knots out. With a fine tooth comb, especially with curly-haired folk, the teeth are too close together and catch different strands of hair between them (due to the hair's curliness), and it ends up causing more knots than it fixes.
I actually use a wide-tooth hair pick, and only comb when in the shower with conditioner in my hair. One full year and no split ends!

Less snags. I always start with a wide tooth first and then move to the narrow. That way things go nice and easy. Good luck.
