What to do !!!!!!!

Hi everyone out their in internet hair land
I'm a 16 yr old boy who has decided to grow out his hair...
I'm already well on my way... The back is to the middle of my neck, and the front goes down a little past my nose when i let it hang in front. Mind you this is only when its wet or combed, my hair is somewhat curly. It's actually more wavy and it is quite thick.
As a matter of fact I'm not really sure what you would call my hair type.
Back in January 2003 I decided not to cut my hair the usual once a month trim and here we are in October and all I've got is one small trim last month (cleaned up the back a little bit) just so the front could have a chance to catch up
I'm aiming for the same length all around type of thing, and hopefully I'll be able to look somewhat Tom Cruise-ish (wearing the hair behind my ears) a la Mission Impossible 2
Now here comes my main problem(s)...
I recently read an FAQ about taking care of your hair, and I'm a little worried that I've doomed myself in the hair world. Over the months I've used gel about 50 percent of the time. Not so much recently, as I discovered mousse about 2 months ago. Since then I've only used gel once or twice when i wanted to slick my hair back for novelty purposes. Is all this gelling going to be bad for my hair in future??? None of it was alchohol gel, I'm pretty sure.
Right now I'm thinking that maybe all my waves and curls come because I mistreated my hair (I never knew I had wavy hair when it was shorter.. I always had thought it was completley straight) Nowadays I shower everymorning, shampoo + conditioner.... then i usually towel dry and then let the rest dry out.... or I blow dry. Somedays if i feel like it i use mousse to stick some of the hair behind my ears.... a little bit falls out in the front cuz its not long enough yet, but I rather like the look.
I get particularly frustrated with the hair at the back.... I've got a decent size flick of hair that can stick out quite a ways if i dont tame it down with a brush and a blow dryer. I've seen all these straightening products in the stores, but they are rather expensive so I havent tried using any yet.
I've also noticed that on one side of my head the hair seems to curl a lot more and go out of place a lot more, is this natural or maybe because of the way i sleep ???
If theres anyone that has any advice for me, on how to fix my hair (if it's damaged a lot) or how I can wear it/comb it/take care of it while I wait for it to reach full length. Or even if my hair will work with a long style, because I'm not even so sure of that now, what with the wavyness. Heck maybe I should just start over!! I dont know anymore!!! Maybe an idea of where I can go to get professional help (stylists)
I guess a picture would help..... so here is a website I made in school..... its got a pic of me on it under the NAMES section (in the picture, that morning I got up, showered, and blow dried my hair (also used this Bed Head "Afterparty" stuff that my mom said was good =P, supposed to make hair silky and smooth)
please help me!!!!!!

Just keep on doing what you're doing, and don't cut your hair anymore. You are well on your way. Your hair looks really good in the pic considering that you are dead in the middle, or just moving out of the awkaward stage.
Most of us have had to us gels, mousses and sprays during the awkward stage just to survive and present some manner of hair control--especially if you are a student in a secondary school--where administrators and other students can be pretty brutal to a longhaired young man.
There are many guys here with wavy/curly hair who can better advise you than I (some waves, but no curls here). Though, the longer your hair gets, I think the less you will have to rely on hair products.

I didn't know I had wavy hair 'til it grew longer, but it seems yours is amplified by your over-shampooing. I'd reduce your shampooings to once or twice a week, over the period of a couple weeks. I suggest you stop blow drying too.

DON'T use any straightenning products or blowdrying until you try reducing your shampooings first, and even then, I'd suggest you stop blowdrying.

That happened to me when I overshampooed.
That's about all the advice I can give, since my hair's about as long as yours. Good luck.

WOW you guys are AWESOME, such a fast helpful reply !!!!!!!!!
couple of questions though
"I'd reduce your shampooings to once or twice a week, over the period of a couple weeks. I suggest you stop blow drying too."
So does this mean I still use conditioner?? .... I've always used shampoo followed by conditioner.... should i just stop using both or just the one, or whats the deal?
Also... I dont need to stuff my hair into one of those showercaps do I?? I mean its alright to get it wet in the shower.. but not shampoo ??

I'd still have you wash your hair every day or two, just skip the shampoo except on the days you will shampoo. I never have and never will use conditioner, but almost every other person on this board uses conditioner every day or so. I'm just telling you what worked for me.
I'm going to tell you something painful that you will hear almost every time you ask for help here: Everyone's hair IS different, so get a variety of opinions, and try them all.

I have that too. My hair has varying areas everywhere, from wavy to curly to straight and everything in between.
Depending on your activity levels and the oilyness of your scalp, you could slowly cut back on shampooing. If you want to blow dry your hair, use a blow dryer with a cool setting. Heat is damaging to your hair.
Your hair looks quite good for the awkward stage. Use whatever products you need to get through this stage. Just avoid alcohol and heat.
There is no need to cut it and start over. My hair is bleached at the bottom and used to be blow dried too. Extremely damaged. I'm just having 1/2" cut off every 3-6 months. But, I'm at waist length now. I wouldn't have considered cutting at all before this length.
If I were you, I wouldn't cut until 1" beyond the awkward stage, and only get 1/2" every 3-6 months after that to tidy up if needed.

Your hair looks great actually... I have to use gel daily just to keep it somewhat presentable/controlable....
I have curly hair and bery frizzy/thick hair so... I am used to waking up with a huge afro.. only now after 13 months does it "sit down" a bit better... but the bigness is there and not long enough to wear ina ponytail...
what to do:
- be patient
- use conditioner
- shampoo less -2 or 3 times a week depending on how it feels
- use a bit of gel (i use loreal melting gel and it works for me)
- to dry hair just cover it in a towel, don't rub
- be patient
(be patient is there twice on purpose:) )

DON'T straighten or perm your hair. The chemicals used are VERY damaging and your hair will break off.
Gels, mousses and other styling aids are chemically unable to permanently change the structure of the hair shaft, so you really don't have anything to worry about.
Lay off the shears for another year or two.
SURPRISE! You have wavy hair!
