Question for Mick...

I have a few questions concerning regular trims:
(1) Approximately how long was your hair when starting out three years ago? (your hair looks to be beyond the standard three year length with growing from standard short hair, especially with regular trims)
(2) How often did you get trims over the last three years?
(3) How much length, on average, did/does the stylist take off when giving you a trim.
Stylist have always advised me to get regular trims, most say 9 to 12 weeks, but it always seemed in the past that they took too much off for my liking, so I went with the general consensus of not getting trims at all to conserve length, especially in the early stages of growth that I consider myself to still be in although my bangs now reach a touch past my chin. The reason I am asking is because my hair for one is uneven in a lot of spots, and two, it's starting to look unhealthy. Thanks for any answer you can offer, my friend. Peace!

I had it in a kind of graduated wedge shaped cut. The longest hairs were on top , shorter toward the the nape of my neck. The very longest hairs were maybe 5-6 inches? The shorter hairs were much shorter.
: (2) How often did you get trims over the last three years?
I decided that I was finally going to grow it when I told my stylist at a November 2000 appointment.
At first, I was getting trims every 6 weeks. Then I moved toward every 8 weeks. Then the past year and a half, every 12 weeks. I make an appointment for my next trim at every visit. This keeps me on schedule.
I don't know why, but between July 2002 and July 2003, I got 10 inches of growth (more if you consider some of the hair lost at trims). I am a true believer that you can reach a healthy, long length more quickly with regular trims, plus look better during the growing the process.
: (3) How much length, on average, did/does the stylist take off when giving you a trim.
Very little. Never more than a quarter inch, most of the time less. I've recently been trying to get a more straight across cut, so my stylist has been taking a little more off the sides, and very little from the center. She also looks for split-ends, especially toward the front, and cuts them along the length.

The most important part is finding a good, supportive stylist. Ask women you know with long, healty hair who cuts their hair. Don't go to a cheap salon. And DON"T go to a different stylist each time. I pay about $35 for a cut. I wear my hair every day, so I think it's well worth the money! (compare it to what you spend on a piece of clothing that you don't wear everyday....) Having long hair is a commitment of time and money.
I hope some of this helps you. If you have more questions, please ask!

Thanks a lot, Mick. I am thinking about getting 12 week trims. I really need to straighten my hair out from being so uneven throughout, but I really wanted to wait till my hair was at least lower neck level. I guess I'll do a little looking around for a long hair friendly stylist and ask a few questions before jumping right in. Another thing that has detoured me from trims is my longhair web-site. I am afraid the compared length from month to month will not be as noticeable as it has been. Oh, well, I guess I'll see. Thanks again, bro! Peace!

Treyn, your hair grows at the speed of kelp. Whatever length
a stylist trims off your head, you would be able to grow it
back in a weekend. :-)
My advice is for you to get many trims because you're catching up
to me! :-) heh heh
