Should I go for it?
Posted by Ian on October 27, 2003 at 11:55:18: Previous Next
The last time I had my hair long was twenty two years ago and now I am 41.
Something strange is happening, I want to grow it long again.
Is this a sign of male menopause?
What will it do for me?
Will I be a happier person?
Need help.

LOL, no. It may be a midlife crisis, but seriously not a "menopause" ;)

Phew. Good question. It will sureley be cheaper than a sports car. And since hair can simply and cheaply be cut when you don't like/need it anymore it is also more efficent.
Do it, even if it is "wrong" for you, you could correct it in minutes.

Absolutely, man...go for it!!! Male menopause...don't think so. Middle age crazy...perhaps. Either way, who cares! When I started growing my hair out over 2 1/2 years ago, I decided to go for it and not look back. It's made me happier because having long hair is something that I've always wanted. Don't really know why...perhaps it's the artist/musician in me! I guess maybe it's because it gives me an awesome sense of control over my life...where I can dictate what I want to do with my appearance despite the norm and/or whatever anyone else says. This is for ME. There hasn't been a day where I've regretted growing it out, and I hope to continue for some time.
So throw caution to the wind, my friend, and grow it out again...if it makes you happy, do it...My guess is that you know you'll be happy with it, so do it and good luck!

Hey Ian!
Im not sure what to tell you on this one so ill just give you my opinions on what i think looks good reason for this is that if you look good then you will feel great (obviously people have differeing ideas as to what looks good but these are mine:)
Firstly, if you are going bald/receeding then i think this looks really bad growing it out & longer. It looks untidy and looks like some desperate bid to re live past youth.
secondly, as you get older, your hair changes, not only in terms of grey hairs but also how healthy the hair is. This is an important consideration since if you have healthy hair now, then it will look nice and be worth growing long. There are a lot of guys in my town who are older than their 30s with long hair and their hair varies from being a really ratty frizzy ponytailed mess and something a bit more smoother and better kept (atho ALWAYS in a tail! what up with that!)
I agree with the idea that well kept long hair makes both men and women look younger reason being that youthful hair is often healtheir than older hair. So, even tho you may be in a rush to get it long, regular trims along the way are a must for older hair unless your hair is really healthy.
So, take these into consideration when you make your decision, which is your own choice. I am just trying to help you out with some pointers:)
Peter Steele from Typo Negative (dont know the webpage) is 41 and his hair looks great! altho it is about 6 feet long.

Perhaps, at age 41, you are just confident enough and mature enough to do what you really want without worrying about what others think.
Will you be a happier person? Well, there is a certain satisfaction in doing something just for yourself, like growing your hair - although the awkward phase is not much fun and you'll have to get through that before your hair looks long, and some men also experience resistance from the people around them (your family, friends, co-workers) that can make it more difficult to feel "happy" with your growing-out hair. Hey, I'm a woman in my 40s, and some people have even expressed to me that I'm "too old" for long hair!
In the end, you have to decide for yourself if having long hair is worth the hassle. Still, why not give it a try and see how you feel about it?
