I need a hairstyle

Still growin' I have managed not to cave so far... its just annoying that every hairstyle i try doesnt work....
First I thought I'd have a centre parting.... unfortunatly the hair on the left side waves a bit and then i get one good side and one mess... thats with styling creme or light gel!
Then I thought I'd go for an indie brushed forwards/messy look, using my mess up gum and everything... though the sides stick out and the top looks too flat... so that sucks too!
Then I saw someone on tv with a side parting that falls across the forehead... that looks cool... but lasts about one hour before its a mess again!
I have so many different tubs of gel and wax and gum and none of them seem to work (some gels are too hard, others too weak, the gums and cremes are cool until its windy or something brushes up against my head) and there is no fabled Melting gel in the UK. Now I wear a hat all the time and thats not always practical.
I am definatly sticking this out, this is the farthest along I have made it with the whole growing out thing... I have about 4.25 - 4.5 inches of hair now... which is a lot for me... my hair is thick and slightly wavy in certain areas... (back, sides, top left and the bottom of my fringe(bangs)). So any way I can make it easier on myself would be a godsend...
So I was wondering, does anyone have any styling tips, coz I am fed up of people throwing change at my feet whenever I am at the train station, though maybe the stubble beard has something to do with that!
If you have any tips please let me know
Cheers

Man I feel your pain, I am at about exactly the same stage as you, luckily a center part works decently for me but thats about all, yet it is hard to make it look good a lot of the time! One thing I did today was part it in the center then wore a hat right after when my hair was still wet, then took my hat off when my hair was dry, and did just a little adjusting and my hair was how I wanted it.

Have you tried blow drying it, use some gel (small amount) then blow dry it and use a finishing spray, it will keep your style longer

I have no experience with your particular hair type, but have you
tried bringing a bucket or something to catch the change? :-)

Could you possibly find a shop that specializes in braids, or a person you could pay to put braids in your hair? If done right, they should last for quite a while.
I don't know if you would consider this an option, but I figured I'd just throw it out there!
