Setting hair
Posted by Sarah on May 21, 1997 at 23:08:51:
My boyfriend has way past shoulder length hair which is slightly wavy but it looks limp. I have been trying to convince him to let me roll it up to get a new romantic type style with flowing curls but he is not convinced that setting hair on rollers can be for "straight" guys. C'mon lads help me out here -there are are a number of messages about guys who have their hair set, but no pics. There are lots of images of women with their hair in rollers (see the link) who are not embarassed so can some of you help me out here and lets get those pics on the web.

Good luck. I have encountered many men on the Web who say they are into rollers and have pix of themselves, but few ever post them. Some only trade by e-mail and refuse to post anything to a web site, but I think a lot of them are just playing out fantasies on the Internet. I wish these guys would share if they really do have photos.

I agree with you J.J. As a guy who loves having his hair set I have found the same thing. Except, I'm the one who has pics. You can see some of my updo's on Victor's "Styles" page. I have just sent him one of me with a full hot roller set. Let's see of some of the others out there who claim to set their hair also send something.

...romantic type style with flowing curls but he is not convinced that setting hair on rollers can be for "straight" guys.
I keep meaning to send in a picture of my husband. We do historic reenactments, so most hairstyles are for costume purposes. Ed had his hair cut in layers suitable to the French Incroyable style of 1797. The first time I used rollers, but the second time I just used a curling iron and it was fine. He did not like the rollers, which was also part of the reason not to use them. But he did like the style very much, and was partiularly pleased that we went to the extra effort.
Maybe you can start the same way with your boyfriend - set his hair for a fancy dress occasion, like Halloween or a theme party of some sort.

Thanks Don and Carol for the support.
It would be really great to see your photos Don and perhaps of other guys as well. I think us gals have got it easier when it comes to hair since any thing goes for women. Some guys perhaps still feel embarassed or intimidated about trying things different things including sets.
Carol I am really interested in the style that you mentioned. Could you provide more information on how you do it. Was the cut done special, or does your husband wear it all the time like that. Is the curling process just an extra, or is it important for the style. Do you use a special type of curling tong or just normal ones.
I was thinking of trying to achieve a spiral perm type effect, but what you said also sounds interesting.
I like the idea of doing it around a special event. We are going to a party the last weekend in May. With the support I have got here I will try and work on him a bit more to give it a go.

: Carol I am really interested in the style that you mentioned.
The picture is up now, Thanks Victor.
:Was the cut done special,
Yes, he was growing it out all over, but I talked him into getting the layered cut to suit the style.
:or does your husband wear it all the time like that
Normally he queues it back into a ponytail. Since the layers are shorter, he uses hairspray to keep it out of his eyes.
:Is the curling process just an extra, or is it important for the style.
Without curling, his hair is fairly straight. The curling is what makes it similar to the historic illustrations of the style, so it works with the costume. The look is supposed to be sloppy and exaggerated.
:Do you use a special type of curling tong or just normal ones.
I used a 3/8" diameter curling iron. With his hair type, I figured a tighter curl would last longer. I used gel on the top to give it some lift, but since he's thinning the effect is not very dramatic there.
: I was thinking of trying to achieve a spiral perm type effect, but what you said also sounds interesting.
They way you handle the curling iron can create a spiral effect. Instead of rolling the iron up into the hair, just grip the end and snake the hair around the iron. How can I describe this better - grip the ends of the piece of the hair, pinched close to the handle of the iron. Point the tip of the iron toward the roots. The hair will be parallel to the shaft of the iron. Imagine a circle around the roots, and trace the circle with the tip of the iron. Do not spin the iron as you go.
This is what I did for the longer pieces of hair, here and there on Ed. I think it would work with all-one-length hair, too. There are curlers called Revolutions that are long and thin - they are used for spiral perming of long hair. I use them to make sausage curls on my own hair. I roll the hair onto them at an angle. With normal curlers, the ends (which are in the center when rolled) don't dry. My hair is 5" below waist length.
: I like the idea of doing it around a special event. We are going to a party the last weekend in May. With the support I have got here I will try and work on him a bit more to give it a go.
Sounds great! Historic costuming is fun. It's unfortunate that the 20th centure took all the flamboyance out of men's mainstream looks. Have fun styling him for the party!

I guess I need to modify the board to have a link back to the main page, http://the-light.com/mens/longhair.html. From this page is a link to the styles page, which is still in its infancy.

Hi Sarah: Check out BeautyNet I have offered some thoughts on this subject to you and cheryl. I have many photos of my self wearing rollers of different types but unfortunately they are not on disk. I will endeavour to find the negatives and have them put onto a disk so that they can be shown over the net. Good luck with convincing your boyfriends to take the plunge. They don't know how lucky they are having someone to set their hair for them. I am currently without an SO and have to set my own hair of a nightime and then comb it out in the morning and after a hard days work it can be not only time consuming but a chore. Luckily I am able to get to the beauty salon a couple of times a week for a "professional" shampoo & set and that relieves the monotony somewhat & leaves me feeling totally relaxed..

OK. Here's one. I think Don sent it in. I adjusted the quality of the image: Despeckle, then soften, then histogram stretch (to get rid of murkiness).

Great photo!! THANKS. Only trouble is, & I don't wish to set up a fashion forum, cynics (not me though) will say that in that particular top/shirt the picture is probably of a female.

If I'm not mistaken, Don is a CD. All the photos I've seen of him usually feature earrings or obviously female garb.
Which brings up an interesting thought -- how many male roller fans are crossdressers, and how many are not but simply have a fetish for rollers and "female" hairstyles?

Right on both counts. I am a minor-league crossdresser and am really interested in female hairstyles. For those CD's out there who may have read the odd Sandy Thomas fiction book written by "Dawn Bell" you know what I like. These are non-porn fiction stories, which when I write them, focus a lot on such things as the hair. Hope to send some more of my pics soon (hope Victor posts them, maybe a seperate CD image page is in order?)

Still waiting for that big break into the Majors, huh?? :Hope to send some more of my pics soon (hope Victor posts them, maybe a seperate CD image page is in order?) The two most active roller pages I know of that are currently active (Marci's and that other one on geocities -- I think a guy names Craig runs it) have shown no interest at all in male photos. But, by the same token, Lisahair (who is still MIA, sadly) had no interest in photos of non-CD males in rollers. Speaking of your pics, that brings up something I've wondered -- obviously for some reason (job? family?) you have a need for security, and all of the pics of you I've seen are taken from the back. Perhaps showing your face is problematic (it doesn't seem to be for most CDs, judging from the thousands of web pages out there), but I know I greatly prefer seeing what a roller set and/or style looks like from the front and/or side. Hi,JJ
I am neither a crossdresser nor a fetishist. I just like having the ability for variation and options available for longer styles. So maybe, I'd just categorize myself in the "trendsetter" category. Long, stylish manes are mostly a highly personal preference, some may find a longer, sometimes more feminine style appealing, some may not. It's really irrelavent to me. I just like the versatility.
As far as putting pictures up on the net, I can't imagine why I would even want to. Kinda like sex - tough to share!

My answer to this point is this: do you download such pictures from the net? If so, contributing your picture would simply be a small repayment.

Dear Terri,
Sorry I don't have a scanner! Besides, I don't feel I'm very photogenic with my hair up. Nor do I roll my hair or take pictures thereof to satisfy anyone else's fantasy. I've never thought of myself as very daring, much less kinky, but I have been rolling my hair for years. What's the big deal? The first time I was 15 or 16
(I'm now 38). My mom started it then, and rolled my hair frequently thereafter. I generally slept in curlers, but often spent the day in curlers on Saturday if I was going somewhere Saturday night. I had a shampoo, cut, and set about every 6 - 8 weeks. Other than that my hairsetting was done at home. I got married at 20 and have continued to roll my hair (or my wife does it for me). And yes, I have slept with my wife with my hair in curlers. My hair is naturally curly, so wetsets do best. I have also used hot rollers, but not often.
Until now, I have never hidden the fact that I roll my hair. I always thought it was pretty obvious by the way it looked. When my first son was born I got my hair cut too short to roll, but that didn't last long. My hair is now long again. Instead of curlers, though, I'm using a curling iron, round brush, etc.. Neither my wife nor I am comfortable with my kids seeing me with my hair in curlers. I now do the shampoo and set routine about every other week at the beauty shop. By the way... I never knew it was any big deal for a guy to get a shampoo and set at a salon. I've never been turned down, and they never acted like it was a big deal either! (Maybe they talk about me behind my back.) I guess after you've done it for a while some of the excitement wears off and it begins to seem rather mundane. I must admit, when my mom first "did" my hair, I remember it being very exciting.
So, relax guys! Chances are, if you don't walk in there acting like some sort of pervert no one will think you are. (You've got me thinking, though... Here I am, doing something as part of my everyday behavior that some on the Internet think doesn't even exist!!! Whoa!!! I must be more "interesting" than I thought!

: Until now, I have never hidden the fact that I roll my hair.
: So, relax guys! Chances are, if you don't walk in there acting like some sort of pervert no one will think you are. (You've got me thinking, though... Here I am, doing something as part of my everyday behavior that some on the Internet think doesn't even exist!!! Whoa!!! I must be more "interesting" than I thought!
: Gail
Hi Terri,
The watchword is patience !! Like Gail I am scannerless, unlike him I do have old fashioned photographs about which I have been contacted by someone who has the facility to get them transferred onto a site. I will be mailing the pictures to him tomorrow. So hopefully before long they will appear on a site.
I have been using rollers, curlers, curling tongs etc. ever since I was a pre-teen. The girl who child-minded me whilst my parents were at work often brought her rollers with her and passed the time minding me setting her hair. I was fascinated by this "ritual" & one day when she left the room I tried setting my hair on a few of her rollers. She returned & found me sitting with my hair (badly) wound onto the curlers. She removed my feeble efforts & proceded to set my hair properly. When the set was complete she secured the rollers with a tightly tied triangle setting net & sent me to bed. She must have informed my mum of what she'd done because the next day when I got up she did not say a word. As this was my first time wearing curlers I did not know what to do next & as my mum made no offer to remove the rollers from my hair I just carried on as normal & continued to wear them throughout the day. I was still wearing them when I went to bed that night. The next day Yvonne, who had originally set my hair, came round and combed the set out. I was immediately delighted by my new look & and from then on continued using rollers to set my hair regularly & still do today.
So Terri keep your eyes peeled , the photos are coming !!

For those who lack a scanner, consider this: the Kinko's chain (at least here in Florida) have a self-serve scanning station where, for 33 cents a minute, you can scan to your heart's content and says the reusults to a diskette. I don't own a scanner, either, but every so often I accumulate various things that I would like to scan and be able to share, and I spend a hour or so at the local Kinko's. Those in a similar fix might make a few phone calls -- if the Kinko's in your town doesn't have this feature (or if you don't have Kinko's where you live), call around -- maybe there are other copy places that do!!
(BTW, Edward, be sure to let us know which site your pix will appear on!!!)

Thanks for the advice about Kinko's J.J. I'll bear it in mind for the future. Meanwhile I have sent the pictures in question off to someone who contacted me through my e mail to transfer & publish on a site. When I know where they will be I'll post a message here. I hope the pictures will appear on this site as I think that (along with BeautyNet's chat room) this is the coolest of sights. Edward

: My boyfriend has way past shoulder length hair which is slightly wavy but it looks limp.
See news of a survey on this subject that some friends of mine intend o carry out in two UK salons during the next week.
