Natural Hair Oils

Hey there. I've been wondering something now that I've adjusted my hair washing routine. So far I've gone two full days without washing my hair, and I'm noticing some things.
Well for one, I've been washing my hair everyday (shampoo and conditioner) for many months now, which I suspect has been rather harsh on my hair. About five or six months ago I remember trying to go a couple days without washing my hair and within one day it was so oily I just decided to wash it everyday. Whereas now, it feels great (or at least not as oily as before) and looks a lot better. I'm guessing because more length absorbs more oil?
My real questions are about the oil itself. How exactly does it protect your hair? And does it prevent/repair split ends? I think mine are a lot less noticable now that I've let it get to the ends. I think I might just try and go for a third day of not washing, but I'm pretty sure I'll wash it as normal tomorrow.
If possible, could you tell me how long you go without shampoo/conditioning your hair as well? Thanks in advance.

Many times I want to use shampoo just on my scalp because it itches, but I don't want to dry my hair out. So what I'll do is get the shampoo on my fingers and try to work it into my scalp while keeping the hair out of the way. Then when I wash it out I hold my hair up above the flow of water. To finish it off I just use a little bit of conditioner. Finally after my hair dries off it's in prity damn good shape, plus my scalp isn't itchy anymore.

where I live, almost no one knows that the conditioner is needed to restore natural hair oils. If they knew it would be better. However some people do use almond oil and olive oil or coconut oil which indeed oils the hair thus adding to the natural hair oil.
