Moon Phases
Nov. 2003 - April 2004
Following the moon's phases can actually help your hair growth.
According to long hair expert Dr. George Michael, "The moon has a magnetic influence on hair just as it does on the tides. During the first quarter of the moon, a person on earth has an extremely opposite electrical pull to the moon itself. Electric static goes through the body, through the hair, and becomes immersed into the atmosphere. The hair actually serves as a conductor of electricity, and breakage and splitting are minimized." From George Michael's Secrets For Beautiful Hair, Doubleday, 1981.

Wouldn't put too much faith in it, as he has "trim to promote growth" on his list. As has been discussed on this board, trimming doesn't promote growth, as the strand of hair is dead, and the roots have no way of knowing whether or not you got a trim. Trimming DOES get rid of split ends, which can be unsightly, but with proper care many people can reduce or even prevent split ends.
Also, the tide is not influenced by the moon's phase. The tide is influenced by where the moon is in respect to a given region of Earth. Tides rise and fall about 2 times a day (the tide comes in an hour later each day), in relation to the orbit of the moon, but the tide goes in and out the same during a new moon as during a full moon. The phases of the moon are indicators of where the Moon, Earth, and Sun are in respect to each other. The phases of the moon indicate no electrical differences at all, just different angles between these three celestial bodies.
