Policemen in Tasmania are allowed to have long hair, as long as they keep it in a bun while on duty.

Dont think so I had a mate with Butt Length hair who did National Service in Sweeden... He knew it would have to go, but he waited until enlistment day to get it shaved... His Drill Sergeant thought he was taking the piss when he turned up at the barracks with 35" hair. Needless to say it was buzzed virtually immediately.

I think it's the Dutch Army. I am quite sure that there is one European Army that is unionized and that allows long hair. (I believ e they have to use hairnets.)

Yes youīre right. In Germany people with long hair donīt have to get their hair cut. They are just not allowed to wear it open. There is a rule that forbids your hair touching the colars of your shirt, when being in the army. So they have to use something like a hairnet or if possible they can wear it in a ponytail. Great isnīt it? *g*

Sounds Excellent - I think I'd be in the Army if it wasn't for "Dress Code" Regulations, and the amazing lack of Civil Rights. Glad to think there are some European Countries that are forward thinking enough to permit it... After all Women in the Army are allowed long hair so its not a rule thats made on practical grounds.
That said... Women are not given combatant roles in the British Army, and if I was in the middle of a war zone I'd hate to get a flyaway strand in my face when I'm trying to locate the bastard who's shooting at me. :p

Yes, the Dutch army certainly is one of the first Western European armies to allow long haired soldiers and they are unionised.
There may be other armies in Europe which allow it now.
