Do any supermarket brands work?

Hi People, looking for some advice...
Having heard many bad things said about Supermarket brand hair products, eg: Pantene, Head & Shoulders, L'Oreal L-Vive, Fructis etc. I was rather surprised to have my stylist recommend another brand ahead of one of these expensive salon products.
She put forward Clairol Herbal Essences and I've been using the shampoo for about 5 months and its been great, only problem none of the stores stock the conditioner.
I return to the Salons in search of a "decent" conditioner and I'm sold one lot of toss after another. (It irritates my scalp... it felt like I had gum in my hair... it cost 25€!) Not happy experiences.
I've reverted back to Pantene Conditioner, which everyone says is bad... but I does make my hair manageable, thought I have to use it 5 days a week.
Question - of the readily available supermarket brands is there anything out there that works and doesn't screw up your? I can't really afford all this expensive experimentation with Salon Brands...
Yup

I use Tresemme "Total Moisture" shampoo and conditioner. Once a week I use Aussie's "3-minute miracle". Works pretty good for my hair.

I used Aussie moist shampoo and conditioner for a long time. But, since they have changed their formula I have switched to Loreal Vive Smooth Intense shampoo and Smooth Intense conditioner. I like the results better than those I got from the old Aussie.
Plus, it smells much better!
Try and find what works for you.

Don't worry about Pantene's reputation if it is working for you. The problem some people, usally those with finer hair experience is that the silicones build up on the hair shaft and lead to breakage over time. If that is not happening to you then go ahead and enjoy it. If it is a problem an occasional watered down vinegar rinse will strip off the coating and prevent damage. Vinegar is great for hair at any rate, it increases the shine and restores softness.

Luckily, I have hair that anything works well on so I buy for pretty color, scent, or character on the bottle. I would suggest starting with the cheapest and see if it works for you.

Try them and find out but know that if you are able to grow your hair really long, it will act much differently with the same products than when it was short(er).
Anything will work on short hair and if you keep cutting it you will never have it long enough to realize any bad effects. That is part of the reason why growing healthy long hair takes time and experience. You try different things and according to how they work you adjust your care routine.
I was just out of town and forgot my Aussie and tried Aveda. That stuff made my hair feel dry and really tangled. It's supposed to be good but I think that more people with shorter hair use it and don't have those problems that I do.
(good thing there was a walmart nearby so I could get more Aussie)

Hey Hair Religion
Your certainly well qualified to talk about REALLY Long Hair... I guess your right - its much easier with shorter hair... I never had a problem using products like Head & Shoulders or Pantene until I started growing... 10 months and I already notice a difference.
When I first started browsing this board back in May/June I couldn't comprehend the notion of tangles...you guys were complaining about it and recommending detangling combs etc... Sure enough six months later and I really know why I use conditioner...(combing hurts otherwise!)
I guess that having now put in almost a years effort (half way there I don't want to screw up all my good work by putting a load of crap onto my hair. :(
Thanks for your advice anyway.
