Suggestion for growing out my hair...

I'm growing my hair out, started in august and it's not all that long yet, kinda looks like i'd be 'due' for a haircut. It's pretty shaggy and my mother says it looks awfully, I personally dont think it looks to bad, but my question is should I get it trimmed or just let it grow naturally, and it will all eventually fall into place...
thanks

let me use an analogy here. . .when a guy who's 21 marrys a girl who is 16 or 17, people say *gasp she's to young* or otherwise comment on the age difference. But (assuming they get and stay married) when the guy is 67 and the woman is 62 or 63, the difference is hardly noticable.
Same thing with your hair. When it gets REAL long, small differences between areas won't be as noticable. The only drawback is that you'll go through lots of growth where the difference IS noticable.
Either way has its pros and cons.

I'm growing my hair longer, (last real chop was in May - 6" now) and I found it can help the feel and condition of your hair if you just have the damaged ends cut off. It will feel a lot better...and if it feels dry, ask for a deep conditioning maybe. But if you are trying to grow your hair, try to hold out as long as you can and then maybe go get it cut. At least that's what I do. It will help. Speaking from experience...you have a long tough road...bad hair days...it doesn't get easier until your done.
Have fun; I am.

I am approaching 2 years and I have not had any trims. I would recommend it, but it's not for everyone.

First thing, your mother shouldn't be saying stuff like that, if she understands that it's your hair, and you can do what you bloody well like with it. Ignore her everytime she mentions it, and she should get it that you don't care what she thinks.
I've been growing my hair since jan 2002. I've learnt a lot since then, like not to get thinned and trimmed, how to wash it properly etc. I'm currently nearing the end of repearing the thin and trim I had in mid 2002 by getting 1cm cut off the ends every 3 months to eliminate the blatent layers. When the layers are more or less gone (I can live with an inch or two), my next plan is to still get 1cm cut off the ends after 3 months, then 1cm cut off the back 3 months after that, and so on. I predict that after A few years of this the result will be what I am after, and that's sholder blade length, but with minimal length difference.
One last thing, ignore everything that anyone says, except compliments. At the beginning I had second thoughts, but as it gets past the bad stage, it gets easier.

Also, eat properly. Have a balenced diet. Don't cut on fruit. I imagine exercising also helps. I'm not sure since I run and train regularly. Just be as healthy as possible, and don't smoke. :)

I wouldn't necessarily take your mothers word that it looks bad...
I've got a bit of reputation here for advocating trims... I do only because I figure that most people want to grow all their hair to one length, so if they just let it grow naturally, after 2-3 years they'll have really long hair which all fall to different lengths... So to even it out they have to loose around 6 inches. (mostly from the lower layers (back n sides.)
Instead I suggest keeping the back and sides trimed and allowing the top layers to catch-up whilst you grow it out. This makes it easier for your hair to look good whilst your growing and it you end up with the same net result.
But if you happy with it as is, carry on...
